Fucking consumerism. Rant inside.

OP, you are the man. I like your attitude.
Sure you might enjoy this music vid in line with your thread:

everyone, have a great day!

must be the worst fucking business quote I've ever heard in my lifetime.

I second this.

Saying I don't like money on a aff marketing forum hmmmm...

You're against materialism because you've taken it for granted since you were a child. Most people in the world would love to have a car, tv, house and you're talking about how it's bad to own these things?

Excess is bad and yes too many people obsess over their iphones and shit but to say they are pointless is just stupid. I'd rather be a american sheep than a struggling african farmer.

Fuuuuck..... this thread delivers more win than I actually thought.

Awesome responses people, and interesting point of views. Bring them more!

Kids in Haiti dying around the clock / I'd send a hundred grand, but that's a nice watch!

BAUSE.

I second this. I've downsized everything I own to fit in the trunk of my compact sedan, and will be living in random cities all over the US for the next couple years. I'm leaving for Austin TX (cue one speed and ironic facial hair) next week with a month on the road, then who knows, but will almost definitely result in temporary residence overseas.

Like people said above, consumerism is impossible to escape, and not always a "bad" thing. Though limiting your possessions to the bare minimum makes it much easier to focus your time, money and mental energy on the more important things in life.

Awesome.

I know that smart buying is different from mindless consumption. I'm not an idiot. If the new Intel i7 will help me to make my business better, I'll buy it. If the the new i7 will only bring the rights to brag in the gaming forums how hardcore my PC is, in my view, I see it plain stupid. Then again, that's the way I see it.

Lukep and other posters, I want to ask you a question:

I don't want to become a hobo, a hippy or whatever. I want to travel the world, live for few years in other countries and continents (Asia, Africa, Australia, etc), experience the world and life. But then again, when I'll have wife and kids, I know that the western world is the best for my family - more secure, better opportunities and other shite.

And to "successfully" live and survive in a western society - you must own a house and other crap that comes with "normal western life". So what do you think - Is it selling out? Is it that I will become another sheep? How do you call it? Does it mean I will sacrifice my own "Me" and my beliefs for the sake of family? I just don't want to become another "Joe" after I have a family.

When I'll be 42, and look back when I was 20, will I see a person who is more developed now and advanced in my world/society views than I was, or will I just see some kid in his 20's with "rebellion" in his blood?

I am really afraid that when I'll be 42 (just for pure example) I will show my kids photos of me when I was 20, and say:"This is your dad when he had urine in his head, now let's go and buy that new "PSP 5th edition with integrated skype and FB" that TV shows us all the time"

It's just that I have too little life experience to understand/see it in a whole. Your replies would be really appreciated.

^Sounds like you've got the bulk of it figured out... Just one thing though:..

DO NOT BUY A HOUSE.

-Apartments are just fine... Much better IMHO. The point is not to be owned by property, and NOTHING owns you like a mortgage and land you have to upkeep. (And pay taxes on forever even if the mortgage is paid off!)

DO BUY A HORSE

-With horses come freedomn... Much better IMHO. You can travel the country side giving off a cool cowboy vibe and fucking any chicks you see. Also cowboys don't have to pay taxes.

Lukep and others, yes even the haters, thank you really much for your contribution to my "soul searching" shit. I really do mean it.

By owning a "house" I meant more a "place" that would serve as home for my family.

I am really afraid that now when I am young with some cash in my pocket and don't have a family, I am all about:"Fuck this, fuck that, fuck 'em all", but when I'll have kids then I will look back and just say:"That was me when I was young, oh those days..." and go to the shop for the next sale.

I am afraid that all my beliefs that I have now will just vanish later in my life. I am afraid that I will just lose all my personality and betray myself and burn out on booze or drugs trying to overcome that I "sold out" to major society.

Fuuuuuuck (in Sid Vicious' voice), this shit is so confusing.

I totally agree, I would add dont buy a house until your much older, thats if you want to settle down a bit. But yes, owning a house blows, I own several and actually rent the house I live in.

I think you're being too worried for your own good. Priorities will change throughout the years, but strong beliefs rarely do. You're only 20, so go do some traveling, have fun, experience the world, and worry about the rest later. Can only think of a couple things.

1.) Why do you think it's better / more secure in the Western world for your future wife and kids? If you can afford to go joyriding around the world, why can't your kids figure it out as well? Not to mention, they're probably going to get a better education at various international schools around the world than in the public education system of the US / Canada / wherever. It's not like the US is the booming place where it's at anymore. World's changed.

2.) My only caution would be watch yourself when traveling, because after a while of skipping countries, it can get quite lonely and depressing. If you're like how I used to be, blow with the wind, and end up in a new country every 6 months, it can get tiresome. You know, you settle in, make some friends, get comfortable in your new environment, then boom, off you goto a new country. Absolutely everything is new again, you don't know anyone or the area, have to start all over making contacts & friends again, etc. That can wear a guy down after so many years.

Nonetheless, all the best in your future journeys!

As a real old fart (58) lemme say your values will be pretty much the same at 42 as they are now - the only thing you wil have is a bit more wisdom (If you are lucky).

The only place I know you can drop out and live in a Yurt (ger) is Mongolia - and you will still need some cash to buy it, and all the animals you will need to sustain yourself. The good news is no taxes - the bad - it gets realy fucking cold in winter and there isn't central heating apart from yak dung in a Ger ...

I used to love the hunt for money - I was gonna be a milionaire by 30, then 40 then I figured out what I needed for a lifestyle and how much cash was required to maintain it. I didn't need no million bucks - if you are single you can live for fuckall in some of the best places in the world. Hell I know married folks who do the travel hacking thing with kids.

But our society IS fucked. Buy shit you don't need to impress people you don't like, and borrow up to the hilt to do it.

Fuck that.

But you know what - when I was your age it was the same... I used to say all progress was regress in the long term.

People generally are good, they system they live in is rooted run by arseholes who will sell their grandchildrens birthright for a few billion bucks.

Fuck those cunts. The system we live and work in can be beat - ethically. But as has been said many times most people are sheep. Sheep get sheared and then eaten by wolves.

Most men would die rather than think - at least you are questioning. Change stuff that is within your power to change, keep your ego strong. And if people don't like you or the way you are, fuck them. Their loss not yours. And don't feel guilty. Every hunter has to kill to put meat on the table. (metaphorically speaking)

Go hunt - have fun.
