Getting ripped and Paleo eating

I guess I was confused because in the OP you said you where in pretty decent shape. You are not. Unless you meant you can run a few miles and lift a bunch. But whatever, lets move on.

Well in order to get ripped and lean, you're going to have to cut eventually. You are in a good position that you aren't grossly over weight, but you have to take shit in phases.

Since you have no muscle you should go in to a bulk. Start lifting your ass off. Eat at least a gram of protein a day per lb of body weight. Most importantly you have to to eat a calorie surplus. As 'bulk' sounds, you're going to put on weight, and some of that is going to be muscle.

Just focus on lifting for a few months, and you'll start to bulk up. Then go in to cut to get rid of any extra fat when you feel you need a change. Honestly though you can lift probably several months before getting to that point.

Yeah when I said decent shape I basically meant I wasnt an obese fat ass. I am trying to decide if I want to join a gym or just convert my garage into a gym. Should I be looking into a free weight set or would something like a bowflex setup work for me?

You hit the nail on the head! I am not concerned with losing weight I want to gain a fuck ton of muscle and be lean as shit.

I am 6' tall and weigh 195 with pretty much 0 muscle! I have never lifted a weight or really done any work out of any kind in my entire life. I do work outside and am on my feet moving all day so I guess that is what keeps me from getting huge fat. I basically have a small beer gut and then my arms are skinny as shit and my legs as well.

I want to learn as much as I can about nutrition and then I am either going to go to the gym and hire a trainer or convert my garage into a gym to start doing to some strength training.

Then skip the Wickedfire bullshit and go to bodybuilding. Com. Sort through the bullshit and it's the Wickedfire of bodybuilding...wiggers substituted for Indians.

Omg... No on the bowflex

Defiantly free weight. A bowflex is a waste of time and money.

More specifically barbel training will kick your ass and in quick order. Look at Starting Strength. I guarantee you results after a couple of months of a routine of Squats, Deadlifts, Powercleans, etc...

If you have the space, it would be sweet to set up your own little gym. If you go to the gym make sure they have a power / squat rack and a good amount of free weights. Even better if they allow chalk (many don't) and you can drop weights with impunity (most don't). In fact the ideal place to go is a power-lifting gym. You know some place that's targeted at all the meat heads.

Alright I will go reg over there and start sifting through the shit.

Came here to recommend Primal Blueprint as well.

Been eating this way since Jan 2nd and down 20 lbs, that's including a trip to Vegas where i said fuck it all.

But if you're trying to get ripped then yes, ultra-low carb + intermittent fasting is the way to go.

I'm sure we'd all be interested to hear what your body-fat percentage is, that should give a big clue as to how much muscle you have underneath there.

I'm actually in a similar position right now. Used to be pretty sporty (slim but not very muscly) but let myself go a bit (got plump but not fat) so I've been on a bulk for three months. The nearest gym to me is 40 minutes away (not very useful in a tight schedule) so all I've been able to do recently is use my dumbbells at home. I've been on all pro's simple beginners routine (It's on the bodybuilding.com forum) which progresses pretty fast (but starting strength seems better if you have access to barbells). So far I'm lifting about 30% more than when I started about 3 months ago.

Just:
- eat 195g of protein a day
- Work out with the Starting strength routine if possible (on free weights)
- Eat at a calorific surplus. Measure everything you eat with fitday.com. Work out your TDEE (google it). Add 200-500 calories on top of that per day. The more you add, the higher the proportion of the weight you gain will be fat.
- Sleep enough and drink enough.

Eventually once you have reached a point where you have enough muscle you will have to reverse the calorific surplus and turn that into a deficit of 200-500 or so calories per day.

You probably won't notice much for a while. You will probably think you are getting fatter. You will probably have days that you forget/cba to do it. Just keep going.

EDIT: Like a few others have mentioned, don't go for low-carb options if you're bulking. You will feel like absolute crap.

Op I'm still going to suggest easing your way into everything at first... I wouldn't use any of these diets spot on for the first couple months, just make adjustments and improvements to your existing diet that will help you easily transition to a full on keto/paleo/IF diet.

I started this transition last month and have been slowly improving my diet and now I am looking to take it to the next level. I stopped drinking sodas/redbull as well as cut way back on my beer intake. I also quit eating out at fast food restaurants every day and now take a lunch with me most days. I was eating mcdonalds almost every day but it has been a little over a month since I have eaten at any fast food joint.

That's great but I'd try and work out how many calories you are eating and how much protein. Gaining weight is just more energy in (calories) to you body than out (used in activity etc). Choosing how much of that gained wait you want to be muscle comes down to the amount of protein you eat and your workout routine.

That is my next step but I honestly hate eating so I know I am not getting anywhere near enough protein or calories. I feel like shit and am out of energy by about 2:00 everyday. I usually only eat one meal a day and it is probably less than 500 calories on most days. I was getting all of my calories from the soda and alcohol before. I was drinking about 3-4 sodas, 2 redbulls, and a six pack of beer or more every single day.

Some of you guys should read the China Study China Study.

What's the point of getting ripped if you're gonna die of cancer at 40?

Casein (dairy protein) has been linked to all the worst possible diseases. (Results from a well funded 40 year study)

Exactly. Start reading the science behind a lot of the new studies and you will be floored on how wrong most of these responses are wrong (or pointing the wrong way).

I just recently started an experiment with my diet to be 99% vegan (I am allowing myself to have a super small piece of meat like once a week *IF* I want).

Check out Dr. Furmans work, the china study, etc... ALL signs point to NOT eating meat, NOT eating SHITTY food that have no micronutrients.

So far I have just started, but after about 5 days this is what I have noticed:

- Sleep better
- weight loss
- joints feel better
- more energy**
- better *cough* circulatory system

This is on a nutrient dense vegan diet. I either juice my veges/fruits or eat whole foods. This diet also does include a small amount of grains.

When I started the no/low carb diet... I lost 20lbs in my first month. Was hard to keep up going into week 6 though

Right you lose quickly, but it's not very sustainable. After about 2 months I really didn't see any more weight loss, and I saw most of my loss in the first month which was about 15 lbs. Then you come off it and start eating carbs again and you're going to put some of that water weight back on. It's not a bad thing, but you have to be realistic about said diet, it's nuts.

Congrats dude I've been vegan for more than a year now too. It's hard as fuck to make the transition but it's definitely worth it if you want to take your health and evergy to the next level.

However, it doesn't matter if you're vegan, vegetarian, meat eater, etc. I've seen plenty of vegan people that are fat asses.

What you really need to do is form new habits. Make fruits and veggies 70%+ of your diet. If you're like me and you love to eat all day long then you will love this. You can eat ALL the fuits and veggies you want 24/7.

The best part is you can do this even if you hate the taste of fruits and veggies. I personally used to hate vegetables with a passion, and I still do, but once you stop eating processed garbage your taste buds change and fruits and veggies will taste 100x better than they used to.

It's all about eating healthy and that's all there is to it. Working out, running, swimming, and hiking are great too but at the end of the day your diet is EVERYTHING.

Cut out everything you stated above and you're already 10x's better than where you were before...were you trying to diet by 40 lol?

If you've read the study, can you give us short synopsis of what it says? Seems that it goes against the grain of traditional thinking when it comes to eating. Some answers in this thread are more directed towards a bodybuilding diet...

I really need to invest in a good juicer.

I already did cut all of that out at the end of last month. Now I am trying to replace it with the proper stuff.

I wasnt really trying to die by 40 but I think I was on a pretty good path to get there. Went to the Dr for my first checkup in as long as I can remember and my cholesterol was over 300 and I am only 28.
