Going to be getting my kiddo an x-box soon, and I'm a little confused as to what I should buy. He's 11.

Do I need one with a harddrive or is he o.k. with the arcade version?
Any point in getting the xbox live service / wireless adapter?

We've got a wii - but he's saved up a couple hundred bucks for an xbox (which I really wasn't going to buy him). However, since he's literally busted his rear end I don't have a problem pitching in for the better box, and the accessories. Just don't really know if there is a point for an 11 year old.

Asked the guys at gamestop and it was like talking to a teenaged brick wall / idiot :)

I've got one I'll sell ya ;P

Live is definitely cool.. But for an 11 year old not sure it's really necessary. The HD is great if you want to put media on it.. Movies, music, etc. Either way, if he wants to save games, he'll need to get at least a memory card (pretty cheap).

So the hard drive versions aren't needed for playing games or the live service? Just to "store" movies and music?

I'm a little concerned about the live service - he already spends a little to much time playing games. He's actually making money playing them though - it's been his little summer project.

Figure it's 'his' money and he's already spent a good bit of his profits on graphics, and into what will make him more money. Just trying to help him make a good decision with his money and I'm clueless :)

Before this my last video game system was a nintendo and I've still got my atari :)

Yes, you ALWAYS NEED a HARD DRIVE with the Xbox.

Get him the Xbox "ELITE" edition. (They just advertised that Microsoft has knocked $100.00 off the price, so it's $299.00 now.)

It has everything he will need. Yes, you DO need the hard drive, and it's better to get the Elite with the 120 GB now (At this price.) than to buy a cheaper model and then pay like $130.00 for just the HD later.

I would also suggest getting the separate two or four battery charger for him. (For the wireless controller. They run out of juice faster than you would think.)

AT 11 I'm sure he will know how to use everything.

Btw, props for gaming your kid on AM so young... Ultimate bonding experience.. Banking out with your pops @ age 11.

If you are really concerned about the Live service, don't have the XBOX 360 hooked up to the network. Problem solved.

You can connect it to download the updates for the system at setup and then every couple of weeks to keep the system updated for the games he plays. (Or not at all, they will still work.) And then take the network cable and put it away.

It's really not that big of a deal with the Xbox Live, if he has access to a computer, he can do a whole lot more with that access than he could ever do with an Xbox 360.

P.S. Once again, a HD is a MUST for an Xbox 360 to work smoothly with all games. (Yes, games save directly to the hard drive and so do the system updates. Remember, an Xbox "is a computer". Would you like to run an 8088 computer today and constantly swap out 5.25 floppy disks to run it?)

I just read your post man - that's some great stuff. I have a 12yr old in the house, that is seriously into gaming. You just gave me a bunch of ideas. Thanks!

Agree, definitely the one to get. If he plays Halo he's gonna want live, start out with a three month card from BB or WM, give him a new one for birthday, xmas or make him do chores to earn more time online.

don't buy the wireless adapter, you can make your own cheaper, or run a really long ethernet cable.

I'd recommend getting him a new gaming chair and big bag of weed perhaps? You gotta get em while they're young.

Umm don't think so mate. He's a good kid and I think he'll stay that way for a long time. Plays baseball, boyscouts, honor student, etc...

He showed an interest in what I do (so does my 12 year old girl who has her own blog as well). Most of their life I've been home working on the computer while they watch other peoples parents work 8, 10, 12 hour (or more) days. I spend about that much time most days hanging with my kids.

Anyway - sold me on the elite (price dropped literally since we looked last week). I don't have a problem with him having the live service - we are around enough to see anything funny going on. Just didn't know if he would need or use it.

Be sure to register the xbox 360 with Microsoft after you get it.

My system just crashed 3 months before the 3 year warranty expired. (The flashing red lights of death. LOL)

Went to the site typed in the serial number, my info came up and I printed out a shipping label. Boxed it up, took it to Staples for FedEx ground. No cost and 2 weeks later I have my system back and it's working GREAT again. (Use it mostly for streaming Demonoid video downloads to the bedroom TV these days.)

i remember playing halflife 1 and counter strike 1.1 like 10 years ago when i was 14... i can attest it worked wonders for my vocabulary :P
