jesus fucking christ.

You musta gotten the noobiest bunch of noobs ever.

Hey Guys, Looks Like I've come back into a mini-warzone

I just got back from my holiday today with the family. Didn't have internet access while there so couldn't do anything.

I've just spent the last 4 hours figuring out how to use wordpress and all the things I can do, and have added content to my blog and uploaded and changed the style around a bit.

Learn 2 Speak German << tell me what you guys think (especially david and emp). I'm having trouble altering the 'special message to visitors.' I've done as the instructions told me that is alter the intro.html to the message I want, and then uploaded it using Filezilla and then overwrited the previous intro.html file, though the message won't change. Any idea what's the problem? Do I need to upload the whole theme again or should it work uploading just the file intro.html itself.

Anyway I'm off to bed. All feedback welcome. I'm going to get more into this in the next few days.

David when you read this, can you send me the outlining steps of whats involved as soon as you can. Thanks =)

Cheers.

edit: just realised it worked. For some reason it didn't come up the first time. strange.

@emp: I half expected that. Get an extra 6 people posting on here and PMing me, and yet a few days later I've not received one piece of content from any of them. This so far has been an interesting example of how retarded noobs can be to all those watching, and it's for this reason that I'm so glad that WF is so nasty to noobs what with the meatspin and all.

@kaltes: At first I was like "what PM?" and then I realised you meant the one you sent me last week where you asked me to add you on AIM. I added you on AIM and you haven't spoken to me yet. I've been so busy and I didn't think to getting around to chatting to you, but if you want to hit me up on AIM I'm online right this second.

@zmxn73: I'll take a look in a few mins, I've got an email from you as well I think so I'll reply there.

An update...

There is no update. Other than zmxn73 who as you can see is working on this right now, we're in the same state we were in last time I posted. I've recieved a few excuses from a couple of the guys, and no responses from the rest.

I confess that I haven't given them a arse-kicking email for a couple of days because of how busy I've been myself, so I'll be sending out another one tonight.

zmxn73 Site Review so far...

Ok, I'm gonna have a look at zmxn73's site so far and see what I think. Other people feel free to chime in and have you 2 cents worth.

First of all, well done on getting the content up there. You've managed to upload the theme and customise it a little bit without any help from me. The more you can work out without me, the better chance you have of surviving on your next few sites.

In the little intro spiel that I can see ("This Site Is Dedicated....") you need to lose the caps on every first letter of each word. It doesn't look good and isn't proper English.

I installed the Homepage Excerpts plugin for you before, but what it's done is turned every post on the homepage into an excerpt - you want to have the latest post shown in full. Go to Settings > Homepage Excerpts > Number of posts to be displayed fully > 1

Have you had any more ideas for categories? You have one category in there and then one post is under uncategorized? You don't need lots of categories, just a few will do.

I'm sure emp and others will have something to add to that as well.

I want to throw something out to the more established members of WickedFire for your opinions.....

.... at what point should I start telling people to go fuck themselves? It wouldn't be so hard if I hadn't actually gone and registered $50 worth of domain names for people - yea I'm an idiot.

What I'm thinking is this: the people that are currently on the programme should be subjected to the same entry requirements of the people that aren't (10 blog posts of content).

And I should give a 48 hour deadline. If the content isn't received by then, I keep the domain name for someone else who wants to do the challenge perhaps.

Guys, what do you think? Is that a bit too harsh? Or am I well within my rights to feel like people are taking the piss out of me?

Sorry if I sound like a big cry baby again, it's just that I tried to talk to people on instant messenger and they go offline - blocking someone who's trying to help you is fucking stupid.

I just need your AIM username, or other instant messenger name to get ahold of you. Thanks.

We spoke tonight, Kaltes is planning on doing a blog on Dog Training and is getting started writing the first few posts.

Hey Guys,

Just a quick update.

I've put another post up there today. Probably going to write another one tonight and put it up. I've also made the changes that David suggested, though I haven't added any more categories yet. I'm still stuck for ideas a bit.

I've just got a few questions. I've got links on the right hand side of the page that come under the 'blogroll' and the 'meta' section. What should I be putting there. I haven't touched it yet so whatever is up there is the default links/settings.

Also what do you guys think about the design. I personally like the simple, professional looking design but wouldn't mind adding a few design features to 'spice it up a bit.' Though I need suggestions please...

Also 2 other questions (couldn't figure out how to edit the above post lol).

Can someone tell me how I can create a good privacy policy. I joined linkshare to become an affiliate of Itunes since it ties in with what I'm doing but they require a privacy policy on the page.

Secondly - ehh mental blank...

Oops another post. Sorry. I want the title of the blog to read "Learn 2 Speak German | Learn German at a Fast and Quick Rate Now | Free Tips, Tricks & Information" for SEO purposes.

Though I don't want this to be the title on the actual page of the blog. I want it to just read "Learn 2 Speak German" (as it is at the moment). How can I get around this?

Thanks in advance.

Delete them all, and only add links to blogs/sites that are on related to your niche, and that are decent sites.

It's fine, although I don't know why the first post on the homepage has normal text and the rest are a lot smaller. It could be the theme screwing up, I'm not sure.

One of the plugins I uploaded was a Privacy Policy creator. Check it out.

Do you want the blog homepage title to say that, but not the actual blog name? If so, use the AllinOneSEO plugin that is installed and ready... just go to Settings > AllinOneSEO and there's an option to manually change the homepage title tag to differ from the blog name.

Another Update (19/12/08)

zmxn73

As you can see from this thread, this guy is asking all the right questions and is coming to terms with Wordpress. There's some content on the site and he's updating it daily for the first month, and then we'll be looking at promotion.

I need to test PingCrawl out for him and make sure we have some good tags to use (probably use WP-AutoTagger).

kaltes

We had a long chat on AIM about a few things tonight and I've setup a Wordpress blog. This one looks pretty motivated, and I can tell this because he bought his own domain and hosting, and with a bit of help from me had everything set up quite fast.

The site is K9Questions.com and there isn't any content on there at the moment, he's just messing with Wordpress and trying to get his head around it.

ItsYoBuddy

He's completed his first 10 posts which I had a look and I'm quite impressed with. Once he's chosen a theme for his site I'll setup the blog and we'll get timestamping those posts for the next 10 days while he keeps writing some more.

His site is www.hiphopinside.com

A couple of the other guys are still working on thier first 10 posts.

Just a quick update. I've continued to post new posts daily onto my blog since I've come back from holidays.

I've also made all the necessary changes that David has suggested.

I've signed up for google analytics and feedburner, as well as put in a number of plugins. I've also signed up for CX Digital Media (still waiting to be approved) as they've got some mad PPL that pays well that fits with my niche. I've also signed up for Google adsense just for some giggles. I've also signed up for linkshare as there's an opportunity with Itunes and their podcasts. I'm also going to sign up for a few other networks soon as well.

I'm also looking for all the feedback I can get from anyone (!emp are you out there! :s) being either negative or positive, as long as you tell me how I can fix the issue! :)

Also on a side note, I was talking to David about k9questions.com (not sure from memory who's set up that site). But as a reader I feel a bad vibe whenever I go to an advice website and see a dark style theme. Although the header looks really good, I'm not a fan of the dark style theme, which is slightly off putting. That's just my opinion and could just be me, but David thought it was worth mentioning here for others to comment on.

I appreciate the constructive criticism.

Just another question that I'd like help with.

Ok this has been annoying me for quite some time now as I've tried to figure it out but haven't been able to get it how I like it.

Currently I've got Ping Crawl set up on my blog >> Learn 2 Speak German and therefore have 'related blog' links at the bottom of every post. What I want to do is change the theme properties so that these links (as well as general external links I've written into my posts) to open up in a new tab so that readers stay on my page.

I've searched around and have found that the best method is to use <base target="_blank">. However I don't want this to affect my sidebar option (where I've got links to my other pages on my site, such as the about page, privacy policy and general categories).

Does anyone know where abouts in the code that I should by placing this code? Or even better is there a better piece of code I can use for css and not html (since I know where to place the code for css).

Infact just to clarify, I want my blog set up exactly like WickedFire has it. All external links should open up in a new tab, and all internal links (in WF case all links going to different areas of the forum) open up in the same window. How do I do this?!

Please Help!! It's getting at me. haha

For anything other than the PingCrawl links, it's as simple as hell. You were half right, what you need to do write your links like this:
Code:
<a href="http://www.externalsite.com/external-link.php" target="_blank">External Link Here</a>
As for PingCrawl, I imagine that the plugin would need editing to make it happen so I'll have a look. You can't that I know of use CSS for this because that just handles the way a site looks and not how it functions (although I may well get told that's wrong by some programmer).

DBWebDev, this is a huge thing you are doing for all the noobies, the experience alone that these guys are getting can not be paid for and the fact that any questions they have are being answered and any help they need is being provided, makes this an opportunity not to be missed, by anyone that is contemplating about getting into this business.

Even though I still consider myself a noob and just scratching the surface of this industry I only wish I had someone such as yourself helping me out 5 years ago.

To anyone that is lurking around this thread and thinking about it, don't think any longer just get into it and give it ago, what you will learn here can not be bought and if it could it would be worth thousands.

Regards
Adam

Thanks for kind words adam7one. It's getting a little bit more hectic and stressful than I originally imagined. I've just spent the majority of my evening talking to 3 different people on instant messenger trying to get various things setup and sorted out.

I can't handle any more people, and so at least for now it's full I'm afraid. Noobs please don't PM me anymore :)
