Google is finally launching an OS

because Windows 7 is Windows XP...and you're paying $100 to upgrade to a new task bar ffs...

you're seriously out of your league here.

the leap from winxp to win7 is HUGE - not only the interface is considerably changed (in a good way, IMO), but also security-wise, things are MUCH MUCH improved.

Think UAC (yes, you might argue it's a big nuisance in Vista, but it's a lot less intrusive in w7) - it provides a layer of security which was totally nonexistent in winxp.

I'm not going to go into detail about what UAC provides, you can read it on the internet (just don't read an article about Windows on a blog lurking with linux-fanboy editors, like pcworld or such)

I'm not saying windows 7 doesn't have its flaws or such, but even as an RC (release candidate), it looks really promising.

Anyway, enough ranting..to each its own.

I have a feeling I won't much like this as a primary desktop OS, but I'll still be super interested to try it out.

The problem with google is that they are the biggest privacy issue in the current century. I really would like to see some more action from US Goverment to limit the amount of data google is allowed to gather.

That's quite the hyperbole. The U.S. federal government itself is the biggest privacy issue of the century (and every other century), followed by internet service providers who have demonstrated a willingness to bend over and release your logs every time the feds come knocking. I don't like anyone having a lot of personal data on me, but Google is far from the #1 offender.

Well google is just copy and paste good ideas that have been around for a while. So there is no real innovation from google. They are like Microsoft, beside the fact that most storrys about microsoft have stolen software xyz are simply not true.

They don't copy n paste, they take them and improve them greatly.

And if that's not innovation I don't know what is.

They already control the biggest database of information ever collected in the history of mankind. This is just one more step down the same path. Datamining made easy.

Think James Bond supervillian rich and powerful. The big evil will soon have control over more and more verticals until both companies and countries are at their mercy. Any competitors will simply be bought out or ran under. Resistance is futile.

If Google OS is free then everyone is in big trouble. Best Buy and Dell with start having a $300 discount on computers that run Google OS Vs. Windows. Who do you think the consumer is going to choose? First the Internet,Phones(grandCentral),Google Library Project, and now operating systems! Talk about a Monopoly on all communication and information. I think that is Big Brother at its finest. Someone better come in an start stepping up to the plate.

I can see it now.. "Target your advertising with our new demographic targeting! Target people who are: depressed, happy, feeling overweight, feeling insecure about themselves, about to break up, having a fight with their significant other, looking into sex tips, about to broker a deal for weed and much much more!"

The Chrome OS will be open source. So there is really no reason to be concerned about Google exploiting users. They will not be able to hide anything, and if someone doesn't like something in the OS they can change it themselves. Online, all bet's are off.

This will really be great for linux. Hopefully they will create some tools that can be incorporated into other distros.

A Linux distro with the backing of a huge, reliable company like Google is exactly what the world needs, and based on their massive success rate it should do well. Hopefully they will be able to make a more compatible and accessible linux distro, bringing it to more mainstream users and then the attention of large software and games companies!

Oh I know... I've just always had this vision in the back of my mind of a bunch of hidden Google employees, living in a bunker, cranking out a new OS from scratch. They worked 20 hours a day, for 8 years straight, but in the end it was worth it. But this is cool too I guess.

and apples's marketshare will grow as a result.

"Confused about why there needs to be a half dozen different operating systems for your home computer? So are we- but at apple we're committed to doing one thing, and doing it right. Apple- making computing simpler since 1978"

sry but i do not get how you can say that there is any kind of innovation with this program. There is nothing new just old stuff re arranged, but maybe you just have not used as many stuff like i did on the internet.
And about those "improve them greatly", actually most of the top apps from google have been bought from others, or got develeoped by open source communitys. They spend years (lol) to make a fancy looking UI improvement and tell the world they have invented the internet again :D.

All the google hype reminds me of the IPhone presentation when they first time showed how you can scroll on the touche screen and the crowed is freaking out like stuff like that would not be there for years :D.

Google is a bit like PPC, they throw tons of new apps every year at the wall and look what sticks and keep those. Just to get more data from you which helps them to sell mor ads on there network :).
There is a reason why more and more of the very best employees from google are shifting away for "new" companys like facebook etc.

I just don't get this mentality. Should google stymie their own innovation in fear of an antitrust suit or being "unfair"?

It's companies like google that are setting high standards and pushing technology ahead, not Microsoft or Yahoo. It's Microsoft that has utilizes "anti-competitive" business practices - google is simply being competitive.

Companies have a fair chance to respond to Google's increasing dominance - they need to abandon outdated business models and fucking evolve.

Look at Yahoo - for a company whose main revenue source is advertisement, it is a fucking mindblowing atrocity how ugly and inefficient their advertisement interface is. If an alien species tapped into our interwebz and saw us using that interface they would probably nuke our entire planet. Should companies like this be given governmental protection from competitors because they are losing market share? Jerry Yang deserves all the shit he has been getting.

And I know so many of you hate Google because of how they treat affiliates, but what do you expect when most of what we promote is fucking bullshit (at least most of what I promote is, anyway.) Google doesn't need us as much anymore, and they are protecting their users from crap, which legitimizes their business even further. And yes, they wouldn't have been able to get quite as far as they have so quickly without all the acai moniez and so forth, but sometimes innovation and progress comes at the expense of temporary exploitation, that's capitalism.

It's fine that antitrust regulators are keeping a close eye on them; if they do fuck up, there should be repercussions. But now is clearly the wrong time to bog them down in the name of "fairness."

Google will definately make better OS then MS on it's first try, because MS is shit, even after 7 versions.
