Govt makes $51 Billion profit from student loans

She's a retarded, I would go into why comparing the two numbers is wrong but I'm at working and typing on a phone. But if she likes to play the cpmparsion game then how about this the average household income is around 50,000 a senntor income is 144,000. If $50,000 is good for everyone else then $50,000 should be good for the senator too

There isn't anything wrong with the government profiting off of interest on student loans...the problem with student loans is all the dumb fucking kids getting huge loans to get a degree in some unprofitable unemployable degree field like creative writing or french poetry or some shit.

Just like you wouldn't get approved for a million dollar mortgage for a house while working at mcdonalds, you shouldn't get a quarter million dollar loan to go study silent comedy films at NYU.

Haha I have to agree with dchuk...you would think the cost of education would drive more students into technology related fields where they can actually profit from their degrees...perhaps that is the point.

Everyone has been told to follow their dreams, do what you love and things like that. It's the same people with those unmarketable degrees that are calling for a bailout of student loans

I don't "believe" in college. I don't think it's a right, nor do I think it's what everyone should do. I would argue 50-75% of people in college right now shouldn't be there.

I'm not sure why your reply escalated so much in regards to mine to be honest. I think education and student loan reform is absolutely needed right now because college is a clusterfuck. My sister just got into a great university and even with 40k+ a year in scholarships, she's STILL going to owe about 15k a year. Thank god she's studying something worth a damn (international business).

The heart of the matter, and what provoked my reply, was you said

"I don't see anything wrong with the gov profiting off student loans"

I do. They shouldn't be in that business. They shouldn't be because they have zero incentive to do it right. It becomes a political matter, and if it is political, they shouldn't be 'profiteering off it'. So yes, I find it wrong that they profit or lose money. Because no matter what, they are fucking up the market by getting into what they shouldn't be getting into in the first place.

I guess we agree, it is just a matter of semantics. Plus, I've personally been going through a lot of bullshit, and have had to fight every inch I've been advancing, so I'm in a feisty mood.

That is no excuse though. I apologize; I'm capable of admitting being wrong. {bow-down-emoticon}

I could go on and on about this subject every day BUT the fact is that the gov't will have to make a change. The financial system works and profits when people buy things, but people are in a sense "tricked" into college and these loans b/c it's so easy to be approved.

Thus resulting in less "buying" and more paying living expenses which really doesn't make the gov't more money, tax wise. They will see it sooner or later, it's a bubble.

an unmarketable degree can get you a journalism gig
Most professionals writers have liberal arts degrees and make mid five figures a year; better writers can earn 6 figures.
People with a strong command of the English language is a scarce resource. You can't outsouce or in-source this talent easily.

Writing and journalism have never been useless. As somebody said courses like - French Poetry, German studies or silent comedy movies are. I think such courses should be limited to free time if required.

lot of you seem to be ignoring what should be a pretty big factor for a group that (mostly) prides itself on a capitalistic view.

These people BORROWED the money in the first place, as in "they took the money, and blew it on something". I find it interesting that, just because it was for an "education", so many people think its terrible that deadbeats can't just walk away from their debts the way they could when they borrow money they dont have to buy a big house they can't afford. This isnt' an "evil bank" problem, of course a bank is going to do what it can to collateralize loans it makes. The fact a bank can take back a hard asset like a house relates directly to why they offer lower rates than they would on a signature loan to start a business. The same people whining that student loan debt isnt dischargeable in BK should realize that, if it was, the rates banks (and by extension the US gov't) would have to charge as interest to make up for that increased risk of default would skyrocket.

I went to college, and took on student loan debt (at an attractive, low gov't-subsidized rate), debt that was far cheaper than the rate on my car loan or credit card balance. That might have been a different story if student loan debt was far riskier to the banks that make the loans, and I'd had to pay 15% interest rate as a young kid without a job and no asset the bank could take back if I defaulted. Basic Finance guys, risk vs reward, making student loan debt dischargeable would have the reverse effect from what a lot of you seem to think, it would make it more expensive and less attainable to the people most like to actually pay it back.

Our exchange has been far too civil for Wickedfire, one of us should be posting pictures of the other person's parent's house or some shit.

This is the gay webmaster forum after all. It may have a lot of smack downs (like all gay communities have plenty of 'leather')... but you have to expect an occasional mutual penis stroking. Especially since even though I disagree with you a lot of you on a lot of topics, I have a lot of respect for many members of this forum (pewep excluded).

Like fuck it is... Just because a few queers post on here does not mean the whole forum is queer. Go visit the boobs thread, maybe that will fix your homo thinking. This is what I see in the meta info on the site... and there are no mentions of anything queer about this place...

It's just a long running meme for fucks sake, like PM Grindstone. I didn't realize anybody actually believed the "gay webmaster" thing (except for the fags of course).

On the surface, this would appear to be the case, and I would be inclined to agree with you..

But, if you take into account the social manipulation and outright deception, using the facade of friendly government, that certain entities have used to propagate and inflate the entire education and loan system.. well.. it's a completely different fucking story.

and anyone who justifies these actions has a serious case of some kind of twisted, mass Stockholm syndrome or something.. I don't fucking know.. but it's sad so many can't even realize when they've been fleeced, especially considering the nature of this forum.

I have a fiance. But I also like to occasionally have my dick sucked by a pewep. That doesn't make me gay; the pewep is the gay!

Not only is tuition expensive and student loans easy to get but they offer extra money beyond tuition to people who would never qualify for a loan from a bank. I turned down an $8k surplus this year, over what my tuition was. They don't even ask if you're employed.

By the same token you need to realise that the money that was lent by the banks was created out of thin air thanks to fractional reserve banking. They can't create money to give to themselves directly but they can create it and loan it out.

There is actually a peverse incentive for the banks to loan to the very people that are most likely to default. Namely they get to convert nothing ie money they never had, into a hard physical asset when they foreclose on the defaulters property.
