No Jason Becker? Holy shit. If he wasn't hit with tragedy, he'd be the final boss for sure. Still debatable that he was the best anyways. This was when he was 17.

I love his songwriting. It's fun, light, and always makes me smile.

A lot of the solos by some of the really technical players all turn to a blur of noise to me and the emotion starts to become lost.

Always been a fan of Chuck Schuldiner
Solo at 1:50 - 3:53

I agree. I used to love the fast guys, starting with Mike Varney's stable on Shrapnel (Becker, Friedman, etc.). Now, anything with emotion and style gets top billing for me. :)

Here's a great slow piece by Neil Zaza:

... and a slow one from Greg Howe:

Who's schoolin who. Cuz I can tell you Dave Navarro is truly a fucking genius. Absolutely brilliant guitarist. Love Janes Addiction. George Lynch is ok, but not in the same league if you ask me. I think Dave is trying to be very humble in that video. AWKWARD.

Also what amazes me about Dave is that he wrote and played a lot of those Janes Addiction songs super fucking wasted on heroin.

I2E, what up with the disabled musician thing?

And yes in-fucking-deed to Becker and Friedman. Paul Gilbert is also bad as fucking hell and shreds like your momma's cheesegrater, y0h:

That Greg Howe track is fantastic Jake!

I've been listening to Howe from his first disc. He has enormous range. He keeps adding new flavor to his style with every release. If you listen to his first disc (self-titled) and his second disc (Introspection), it's like they were done by different artists. Here are links to the YT collections for each album (they probably won't embed correctly. EDIT: Embedding a library appears to result in embedding only the first video in the library. Lesson learned.)...

Self-titled disc (this one is actually a mishmash of his work). The tracks from his first album are as follows:

1. "Kick It All Over"
2. "The Pepper Shake"
3. "Bad Racket"
4. "Super Unleaded"
5. "Land of Ladies"
6. "Straight Up"
7. "Red Handed"
8. "After Hours"
9. "Little Rose"

Some are missing from the collection.

If you like live, funky jazz, you'll probably dig Howe's work with Dennis Chambers and Tetsuo Sakurai. Here's an hour clip from 2004...

I could go on about Howe almost as much as I can go on about cops. ;)

Pat Martino - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia-
In 1980, Martino underwent surgery as the result of a nearly fatal brain aneurysm. The surgery left him with amnesia, leaving him, among other things, without some memory of the guitar and his musical career. With the help of friends, computers, and his old recordings, he made a recovery,[1] and learned to play the guitar again.

Here are some feels for you-grew up listening to this; this is still one of my favorite interpretations of How Insensitive, taken from The Visit! (Cobblestone, 1972) - also released as Footprints (Muse).
There are some beautiful recordings on this album.
The accompanying transcription is great-
