Monica, you're not going to get much of a response here. Eventually they stop the boob harassment but by then you'll be long gone.

If this is really a serious question and you are really doing a thesis then i would suggest going through the forum, looking at peoples sigs for their blogs, and then contacting them through their own Aff Marketing blogs. They may or may not wish to talk to you then, but believe it or not sometimes they can be helpful. ;)

Indeed. But why go through all that trouble when you can just post boobs and get it over with? Much, much faster.

C'mon Turbo, this has got to be some troll looking to create a travel site and wants us to give them ideas on it.

Just look at this again: (Substitute the word research with Site in the sentences below and you will see what I mean.)

"First of all, I want to do a small Site/research to get some ideas of how to set up my main Site/research. The small Site/research will include some general open ended questions, like:

- How many travel websites will you visit to compare prices and / or packages?
- What kind of research do you do on possible destinations?
- When you use a travel website, what factors are predetermined before you visit and what do you decide on after comparing options?
- How do you find travel websites online?
- What motivates you to finally book the trip?

What do you think of these questions and do you have any ideas for other questions?"

Thesis my ass, these are hot button questions for site design and opt-ins.

I may be wrong, meh thinks not.

the senior seo guy for expedia is actually really nice and very smart and i'm not positive but possibly a member here. You might consider contacting him for a quick interview to fill a few pages and impress your teacher. They tend to be suckers for students who get their info from unique sources instead of just wikipedia.

Hi! My name is Monica. I am new on this forum! I am writing my thesis about affiliate marketing in the travel industry.

Isn't there a different section of the forum called affiliate marketing? Wonder if you'll get better results there.

My goal is to describe which factors are most important for consumers when booking a trip online and what the role of affiliate websites is in this search process.

Speaking of research, have you tried to look for similar market research reports that already address this area? I was thinking about older issues of BusinessWeek, or your local library, or your local university, or gathering statistical data from public sources.

I want to set up a large questionnaire to get some conclusions. However, I have some difficulties setting up my research. First of all, I want to do a small research to get some ideas of how to set up my main research. The small research will include some general open ended questions, like:

- How many travel websites will you visit to compare prices and / or packages?
- What kind of research do you do on possible destinations?
- When you use a travel website, what factors are predetermined before you visit and what do you decide on after comparing options?
- How do you find travel websites online?
- What motivates you to finally book the trip?

What you are describing is called a primary research method where you design and administer your own survey and tabulate the results. Take a look at free services like surveymonkey.com and wufoo.com and zoomerang.com and similar; this will help you to create the survey itself and quickly send it out for prospects to answer.

But to answer your question, here is my perspective. When I want to book a trip online I already know a little bit ahead of time about my expected budget, the potential schedule of travel dates, and preferences about how I want to get there. Yes I look online to gather data, and I usually start with the actual company, for example Delta Airlines or AirTran when trying to book a flight. This is just the first step to get a sense of the actual costs involved. Same for the hotel, rental car, etc.

Once have those costs in mind, I start searching for a deal on a discount travel site, usually through FatWallet.com to reach the merchant website so I can get cash back. Then I compare what I am finding to newspaper articles, discussion forums, coupons, daily discounts, special promotions, and any other methods I can dream up, to see if I can lower my cost. The trade off for me is finding a balance between low prices and being physically uncomfortable. It helps if I am by myself, because I will try to stay at Days Inn, or take multiple flights, etc., in order to save $50 or $100 or more on the total travel cost. Forget all that if I have to travel with my wife.
