FREE Viagra for the unemployed! Pharmaceutical company Pfizer earned this catchy headline this week with its plans to make 70 products free to US residents who have lost their job.
Anybody who has been taking one of the 70 drugs for at least three months and became unemployed after 1 January this year can apply.
"We all know people who have been laid off recently and have lost their health insurance, making it difficult for them to pay for healthcare," says company executive Jorge Puente.

just because someone works for someone else and loses their job due to corporate greed and/or lack of economic demand does not mean they're an idiot.
there are thousands of engineers and other truly helpful humans who are unemployed today not because they won't work, but they can't.

People don't lose their jobs to corporate greed. Greedy people don't get rid of productive workers. Corporate stupidity, sure. Greed, nope.

Lack of economic demand can be a problem, but everyone should constantly be upgrading their skillset and their employability. A lot of people get caught with their pants down because they stop learning and hustling. They get comfortable, and can't handle change.

Without going into too much detail, this is not necessarily true. If you refuse to work for less, if you refuse to move, and you refuse to change careers, etc then you might be keeping yourself on the employment sidelines.

With all of the moral hazard from housing bailouts, there are incentives for people to stay unemployed so they can get help with their mortgages from the government. This keeps some productive laborers that the economy could use, sitting on the sideline, because the state has created an intervention that makes it more profitable not to work, than to work. Extending unemployment benefits does this as well.

Instead of extending unemployment benefits, the government could have taken that spending, applied it directly to subsidizing employers who hire skilled labor, and you would have ended up with people getting paid to work and remitting some taxes, instead of getting paid to not work and remitting no taxes.

But if you don't have high unemployment, then it is very hard to justify taxes for wealth redistribution. Just as if the cost of medical care wasn't subsidized, it would fall, which would mean it wouldn't need subsidies.

But if you're a politician, and you don't have OPM to push around, then why the fuck would the lobbyists buy you blowjobs and coke? You wouldn't be worth buying!
