It's a full time job trying to stay focused on my own goals and coming up with a meaning for my life each day so I don't have any time left to even try to understand politics.

Don't. Stay focused on improving your own life. Politics is a huge time suck except for the parasites at the top who live off everyone below them.

People follow politics for the same reason they watch reality TV and obsess about NFL football.
