How well trained are your dogs?

For those of you that have dogs, how well trained are they? We're moving soon, and I figured my dogs are probably a little uncivilized at the moment, so I should probably bring them up to speed with some basic commands. I just can't bring myself to do it though.

You know, I'll try to teach them a command in exchange for a treat, and they just won't have it. They just give me the evil eye as if to say, "fuck you, you patronizing cunt, you can keep your god damn treat, I'm going to go lay down", and they walk away from me. Honestly though, I find that pretty cool, and kudos to my dogs for doing it. I would react the same way if someone tried treating me like that.

So you know what? Fuck it. They're great boys, they know the difference between right and wrong, I have them on a good daily schedule, and we have our own little system going that works just fine. Good enough. They're my dogs -- not my obedient little servants.

How about you though? Do you let your dogs be themselves, or train them up to do little tricks for your pleasure?

I'm in the exact same boat as you. Like you said, as long as they participate in the peanut butter game everything is rainbows.

I am just glad I managed my god to not poop in my house :uhoh2: That is probably the biggest accomplished I achieved with my dog :D

This is one of the benefits of living in Thailand. We have bum guns!

My guys know full well if they need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, to go in the bathroom. This way, it's a quick spray with the bum gum, throw some soap down, quick mop, another quick bum gun spray, and you never know it even happened. Works great! Never really needed, but if they get diaherrea or something, it does happen.

Holy fuck, that's my dog! Seriously, exactly the same. Eyes are a little different, and there's no way my dog would ever snarl, growl or show its teeth like that. Other than that though, splitting image of one of my dogs.

There's no way my dog would attack that easily either. I'm confident they'll attack if needed, but they're going to need a good reason to do so. I've only ever seen them feel truly scared / threatened a couple times in their life, and I know I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that.

If you want to train your dog how to eat cheeseburgers and be lazy, I can help you out.

Bacon, you need bacon.

Those shitty dog treats they won't be interested in. I have two Siberian Huskies. Full of beans and hard to settle, not interested in normal dog treats, some crispy bacon on the other hand worked a treat pun intended.

I have 2 dogs from the pound so they're pretty rotten.

For some reason 1 of them would violently attack me when I tried to climb into bed, sometimes breaking skin. Eventually I figured out I have to bring a treat to bed and she'll be waiting at the top of the stairs and eat the treat while I climb into bed.

The other dog could give a shit about food and usually hangs out in the closet in one of the bedrooms.

As with people, good manners and discipline start early in a dog's life. If you wait til a dog has tons of bad habits (like crapping in the house) and won't listen to your most basic commands (sit, stay, lie down, heel), when they're 3 or 4, or however old your dogs are now, it's going to be fucking hard.

It partly comes down to responsible dog ownership and being involved with your dogs on daily basis. You can't be just leaving them to their own devices while you work or go out. Forgive me if I'm wrong, just going on previous threads, but IIRC you let your dogs roam the neighborhood. Meaning, they don't get walked on a lead, they shit where they want, scare the crap out of and/or piss off the neighbors, are out making more unwanted dogs, etc. etc. and generally have bad habits.

On the upside, those are some street wise dogs which is always good, but that's not being a responsible pet owner.

In contrast our dog gets walked twice a day, like clockwork... our schedules conform to the dog's needs, not the other way around. She's always on a lead, and we always have poop bags to pick up the shit. She's in the house or in the enclosed yard during the day. She pisses in the yard, but never takes a shit there. She hasn't taken a piss or a shit in the house since she was about 6 months old, though she peed in a friend's house once who had another dog. The few times she has had diarrhea at night she wakes us up to let us know she needs to go out and we get up and take her. She eats only this brand of food from Alberta, Canada Dog Food | Orijen which we swear by, and a little bit of cooked scrap meat/veg from dinner.

Mine would be dead if we gave her free reign. Stolen for baiting dog fights, poisoned, killed by fishing line/tackle, run over, or taken to the pound to be put down (they don't screw around here at the gov't run killing stations, and they're corrupt as fuck). She would always have the shits because, left unchecked, she will eat anything.

She knows sit, stay, come here, lie down, heel, paw, roll over (can only go one way though), leave it, look, who's that, where's the cat, and a few other bits. The girl has also done some agility and relay classes with her so she can do a few other maneuvers like going in a figure 8 through the girl's legs, come about to heel or sit, backing up on command and stuff like that. She would appear to enjoy it and gets rewarded for it with treats and added affection.

All these skills are good when controlling her in a public place, around other people, kids, dogs, etc. plus these kinds of exercises are good for her mental development. She can be obstinate too, and if she doesn't want to participate, so be it. She's certainly not our "obedient little servant", but a well mannered dog which is important in a civilized society.

So if I were you, I would find a qualified expat teaching obedience classes. Get some quality harnesses or collars and leads. No choke chains or spike collars or inhumane bullshit like that. It's simply going to take some month's of dedicated daily work to get the dogs into shape. Agility/relay classes are also good for getting dogs listening to your commands.

Then again, when you say shit like...

I just can't bring myself to do it though.

...

So you know what? Fuck it.

I'm guessing this is all just going to fall on deaf ears and you'll do nothing of the sort.

Good luck bro.

ps. Have you checked what the regulations are for taking dogs to wherever it is you're going? To import a dog into Europe, it needs to be blood tested, then re vaccinated, dewormed, within 30 days before travelling, and all of this info needs to be recorded in a passport, and the dog needs to be microchipped. It used to be even stricter, especially entering the UK, which included a 90 day quarantine. Fortunately they've relaxed those rules somewhat.

I have a black lab 1.5 yrs old. He can do all of the basic stuff and we are working on some more advanced commands now. The biggest one we have down is heel. He walks at my pace (even up and down stairs) by my left side and sits when I stop. What I am working on with him now is making him stay (which he has down), throwing the training dummy, releasing him to retrieve it and having him come back to me before he gets to the dummy. Come is a little harder to get down when he is on a full run away from me, but he will get it.

It boils down to time and consistency. I work with Buddy at least twice a day for 10 mins. I do not use treats for training, just affection (that's all they want). The most important thing is to always end the session on a good note. Buddy has about 10-20 minutes before he loses focus, when that starts to happen we just play or go back in. If you can turn it into a game where they know they will get praise it becomes a lot of fun and a huge stress reliever as well.

I don't have a dog, but when I get one I do plan for him to be an "obedient servant". In certain countries it only costs a few grand to get your dog properly trained. IMO it's well worth the money:

I always wanted to teach my dog to fetch me a beer, but it would be bad news if I taught her how to open the fridge :)

That's why you get a mini-fridge just for beer. No more having to get up from the sofa...you can have it all for only a few treats.
