Really? Kids should go though sex ed?! Wow that's fucking genius. Around here you have to take sex ed [unless your home schooled]. We even have these awesome robotic babies you have to take care of for a couple days [yes even in class] they cry at any time of the day and have sensors in them to tell if you hurt them [ie hit their head]. To get them to stop crying you have to stick a key in their back and turn and hold it sometimes for an hour. Ah good times.
I have seen nothing in the article that would link this to Christianity. I mean I hate all religions with a passion but is there something I'm missing?

Well the idea is that these kids do not know anything about pregnancy, sex, or STDs because they are only taught "sex=bad. Don't do it.mmkay" Presumably this is due to conservative Christian influences and the idea that sex is a sinful thing that should only be done between a married man and woman in the missionary position with the lights offs. Sex should not be discussed,etc.
Its a difficult issue for me as I am an atheist but I also am a libertarian ( probably more on the anarchist side) who really does not like public school indocrination. As much as I dislike religious nut jobs (especially the bigots) I dont know if they can really take the blame for people being idiots. I knew what the hell sex was and all about STDs way before public school sex education and I don't know anyone that really learned anything from it. Maybe how to do a breast/testicle self-exam.
Most knowledge is learned outside of the public school walls. I guess there is the case for those who have terrible parents ( who are also morons) and no access to resources, but I am generally not in favor of increasing the scope of the public school curriculum. However the abstinence-only moral preaching has no place in school either. I guess if sex ed MUST be there it should be comprehensive. Make room by getting rid of things like D.A.R.E. and other political propaganda "education."
Unfortunately since most parents don't want to do it it's left up to the schools. I don't think it's like learning your abc's. I think it's more about attitude. If society (schools, politicians and parents alike) have the attitude of education (prevention, disscussions), good practice (condoms/bc) and maybe even emotional/personal disscussions that go along with sex, I think we would be a lot better off than the ostridge technique this country depends on now.
I can't believe that in the 21st century a modern (and supposedly secular) democracy is seriously teaching their children to "just say no" when it comes to sex.

Has anyone read Predictably Irrational by some-dude-I-can't-remember-right-now? There was a whole chapter on the differences in answers from guys who were relaxed and those who were masturbating during questioning. During the latter session even the most straitlaced ones were more willing to have sex without protection, slip a roofie in a drink and were more partial to mild bestiality. Glaringly obvious point was that just saying no is easier said than done when it comes to this topic.

The results of that meddling is what makes me puke nasty comments in a big arc all over the forums (and real life conversations).
