I just rewrote this entire thread. Fuck Safari tabs and their invisible close buttons.

Going along with the whole jack3d thread, does anyone swear by certain medication or 'techniques' to get to sleep? I'd consider myself an insomniac. Almost every night it takes me forever to actually fall asleep. It's pretty shitty going to bed at 1 AM thinking "I have class at 8, I really should get some sleep", getting up to check the time a little while later knowing you've been up the whole time, and finding out it's now 6 AM. I've pretty much given up on attempting to have a normal sleep cycle, at this point I go to sleep anywhere between midnight and 8 AM and wake up anywhere between 8 AM and 4 PM. It moves around a lot because of how long it takes me to actually fall asleep, which is never the same, it varies between an hour to 5 hours sometimes. I can't remember the last time I just fell asleep. The only reason I ever fall asleep quickly is because I've been up for 30 hours straight and I just had a caffeine crash. I'd prefer not to rely on that since I'm trying to take it easy on the crap food lately.

I've tried a bunch of shit, from different types of music (even ambience streams from di.fm) at different volumes, no music at all, changing things in my diet like removing caffeine, increasing/decreasing frequency of meals, not eating within 4-5 hours of going to sleep, etc. Nothing works.

So yeah, any other insomniacs? What does everyone else use?

Go to the gym and lift weights every day, you'll quickly start sleeping MUCH better. I used to go to sleep around 4-8am every night and sometime sleep until supper time. Now that I hit the gym at least 5 days a week I often go to bed before midnight because I'm exhausted

I actually used to lift weights nearly every day. Between my fitness classes, canoeing/hiking, going to the gym and being on a track team, I got a good bit of workout done but it didn't really change much. I've had this sleep problem for at least 5-6 years, and I've been through a lot of lifestyle changes in those years. The problem never went away.

Had the same problem and used to just smoke (kush) and knock out but I don't like doing it every single day just to sleep... I just revolved my whole schedule on the hours I can get up and all.. night classes and do IM stuff in the afternoon.

I can't remember who it was (sorry) but in another thread someone suggested simply drinking 1-2 beers and then stopping. Sleepy time is sure to follow. And of course you could live on the edge and blend that with some diphenhydramine, but you don't want to make a habit of that.

gym, sex, or glass of wine/scotch

put you right to bed.

Oh milk and bananas too. In fact last night I had a piece of gingerbread cake and a glass of milk around 9:30 pm, I slept like a baby from 10 pm to 9 am. That shit will knock you out COLD.

I recommend the same thing I recommend for hangovers, migraines, nausea, and mild depression.

physical effort will most likely send you to bed, no matter how much of an insomniac you are.

work out, fuck hard and frequently, get out of the house from time to time to breathe some fresh air (jogging would also help, imo).

also, I'm going to say something that will probably attract some flaming, but w/e... try to balance things in your life, reach some sort of equilibrium...yeah, it sounds corny, but it helps, methinks.

anyway, your body requires sleep to recharge... if you trash it hard enough, it will eventually send a 'signal' to the brain to fucking fall asleep.

Thanks tips.

OK, I guess I need to spell it out then.

  • Stop looking at the clock
  • Stop thinking about how soon you have to wake up
  • Stop thinking "I have class at 8am"
  • Stop thinking "I really should get to sleep"
  • Stop "getting up to check the time a little while later knowing you've been up the whole time, and finding out it's now 6 AM"
  • Stop constantly switching up your routing like "changing things in my diet like removing caffeine, increasing/decreasing frequency of meals, not eating within 4-5 hours of going to sleep, etc."
You can't sleep because you're trying too hard and thinking about it too much. If it's late and you need to get to sleep got to YouPorn, squeeze one out and lay down. Night night.

benadryl works. And its OTC

Benadryl makes me loopy, I get bad sleep and wake up drowsy.

@OP if you want something that will actually relax you and make you fall into a natural sleep you need something with melatonin + valarien root.

I use [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Schiff-Knock-Out-Melatonin-Theanine-Valerian/dp/B0009F3P0I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1259009587&sr=8-1"]Knock Out[/ame] (not aff link) pretty much every night. Infact, my husband gets mad at me when I forget to take it cause I toss and turn and keep him up.

OTC night time cold pills. I'd recommend Vicks NyQuil as I don't seem to wake up groggy from them. It's what I use when I can't sleep.
