Few weeks ago I talked bout a website Im doing for my buddy who owns a custom bike shop. We talked about me doing the web, videos (already done a few) for promo etc.

So...few days ago we talked on the phone, planning what to do with the site and the whole idea, Im in the process of designing the website etc...and he just slips this in the conversation;

"oh yeah, guess what, this guy from around the way came by to visit my garage yesterday and he showed me his new SLR camera, some dope shit, it shoots slo mo video, striked a match in front of it and it looks awesome in slo mo...we're gonna shoot some short film with one of my bikes"

And my first reaction (not saying Im right or not, it was just my first reaction) was - speechless. I was like "what...why?"

And he said "well I know him and he just got the camera so he wants to test it around etc so were gonna shoot the video in a few days just for fun"

didnt say shit about it to him, but I feel this is a bitch move. Agree? Or disagree?

I mean - what good will that one video do for you, why in gods name would you let some random schmuck with a decent DSLR shoot it just because he expressed the will to do it, right before the site gets launched and right before we make a proper video, with my own equipment?

Doesnt make sense to me, but I may be wrong.

he must of saw one of the videos you created and thought his 16 year old nephew could do a better job.

If I were you I would burn down his fucking shop. What he did is the shittiest move of 2011, hands down. You have every right to hate him and to rant about what he did on WF, DP and WaFo. You don't need friends like this! Your real friends are on WF and FB! Remeber!

Really?

So...let me get my femme logic straight. We (as long-time friends) agreed on the whole website/video deal.

So now, a guy from around the way walks in with the camera and goes "hey guess what I have this new camera so why dont we make a video".

What difference would it be if someone with a new laptop came to visit his garage and said "hey I make websites check this out, I made one for you, like it?"

Its almost the same to me.

If I had the garage, and some dude I know but dont really know busts in and tells me how he has a new camera and wants to shoot my bikes, I would tell him no. Do I know his works? Will he make a shit video?

Why would he waste my time?

Thats my way of looking at it, apparently Im a bitch.

I moved on. Im not actually crouching in the corner of my basement screaming "why oh why" and plotting a dramatic revenge.

I just wanted to see if I got pissed about it for a reason or for no reason. I still think it was for a reason, but whatever.

I never said I have any decision what he does with his property, but I just find it pointless to let some random dude with a camera walk in and get to shoot a video...its not a 5 minute task...they will probably shoot on the road, while driving etc. so what bothers me is the notion he cant wait few more weeks until the site is up, he will rather go out on this fuckin freezing weather and let this random guy shoot video, waste his time and money.

But whatevs.

So what?

Say "cool", grab that video and incorporate it into the website along with all the other stuff.

The schmuck wants to make free content? Have him go at it!

::emp::

Yeah...if you say so. And it would be better to talk to him about it. So far it just seems like you are mad about a potential opportunity to use this experience to build your portfolio. It is not like what he is excluding you by mandate. Both projects can get done. But in the end, his shop, his decision. And from here to be such long time, close friends would it not be better to express your concerns and feelings?

That man's happiness should not impact you like this.

Wait, so you are doing this for some kind of a monetary compensation?
If not then why the fuck would you care?

Hello friend,

For betray you, you should ruin friend's life and bring shame to his entire family.

But for be serious. It your friend shop and website. So he can do whatever want with them.

If you no like idea can tell him think it good idea. But if he still want to do it then he can because it his shop and website.

Good luck bro

This happens all the time. You do commissioned work like a graphic or content, or whatever, and the business owner also has a go on his own due to his proactive personality. Your graphic blows his outta the water (he did his using Autoshapes and WordArt), but he wants to use his because he's proud of it and genuinely believes that his is better. Then he thinks he doesn't need to pay you for the work you've just done because he's decided not to use it.

Get a proper contract and detailed brief for the site and content, and get it signed off at every stage, just as if you didn't know this guy at all. Better still, don't do work for your friends; the only possible outcome is butt hurt.
