Is PC gaming dead yet?

Do you even Steam bro?

Praise Lord Gaben.

pc gaming died once steam gained traction, now most pc games are cell phone type experiences. spyware based DRM, pay-to-win, constant nagging to get DLC, games that were free that are now $9.99 windows 8 remasters, etc. thanks reddit

^Apart from Dota 2 and Team Fortress, this is true. Free to play games are pay-to-win. Sometimes they have server problems things are lagging aaand you get some cheaters here and there.

You'll see tons of games in alpha version and they make such a good presentation to make you think it's actually worth to spend your money. When you buy the game it turns out it's a crap shit full of bugs and the developers still have the guts to ask for "premium account" money.

Still, pc gaming it's not dead. The most fun is with a bunch of friends. Strangers on the internet turn out to be kids, trolls or noobs.

Oh, make sure you get a fat ass hard drive. Games from this gen are coming in HUGE. Expect at least 30-50GB install sizes at least. Most of my games are not on my SSD for this reason.

^^ Get a bigger SSD, then you don't have to wait for levels to load and shit. It makes a huge difference. I've got an Intel 240gb and have 2 to 4 games installed at any given time along with all my programs. A 500gb Samsung or 480gb Intel SSD can be had for about $240, which would be more than adequate for even a hard core game fiend.

You're talking out your ass dude.

PC gaming is in it's renaissance right now, with shit tons of crowd funded projects coming down the pipe from independent studios and some amazing titles being put out by the big dogs.

Graphics have never been better, with Nvidia just releasing their 900 series of cards that are super low wattage at twice the performance of their predecessors, save for the Titan cards.

4K is coming on strong with tons of high performance 4K gaming monitors that are reasonably priced. Not to mention all kinds of other innovative hardware being developed and released.

PC gaming competitions have never been more popular with huge audiences, sponsorships and cash prizes.

Along with the points others have made above.

So yeah, I'd say PC gaming has never been more popular. You simply can't get the same level of performance, fidelity and competition on a console. It's nowhere near the same.

Why hold off? What would be the point of waiting? That's like saying wait for the next mobile phone model to be released, because it's going to be the best. Get stuck in, build a rig. Add to it or upgrade it as necessary.

I think I've posted this a half dozen times before, but this is my current rig, now about 2 years old. I use a Qpad mechanical keyboard and a Corsair mouse. In the coming weeks I'll be upgrading it.

Most people would read what you said and think "wtf is this poindexter talking about?"

Go back to jacking off to the league of legends characters while your girl begs me to put the pipe down her (not my fault these hoes and tricks find me handsome).

I video taped your girl and I fucking so she can show it to you and your adopted 6 year old son.

and then you'll say "fuck you nozaw, you ruined our engagement. my girl and i went out for 6 years and you ruined it. she was a virgin too faggot."

I'm still waiting for the remake of this motha fucka:

I dont play games anymore, and probably never will until this happens...I'm talking about a real remake total overhaul for a console

Ohhhhh, you sure told me. Is that the best you can come up with son? You forgot the obligatory mom joke to top it all off. You might want to give the members here a little more credit. Their reading comprehension is clearly better than yours. So sit down and STFU.

If you're going to build a new rig, I'd strongly recommend getting a decent CPU and PSU. You can cheap out a little and get a mid-range GPU and then upgrade later or buy another and run SLI. Having enough power available with a decent PSU will give you the option to easily add additional cards later without having to change PSUs and re-run all of your damn cables again.

I game a lot and run a AMD FX-6300 six core CPU, which pushes a 660ti GPU. I've never had a single game max out my CPU yet. I have only had 1 game max out my GPU, Star Citizen. Even with my mid-range CPU the bottleneck on my system is still my GPU. Of course, if I had a top-of-the-line GPU my CPU might end up being the bottleneck.

That's why I recommend a decent CPU and PSU, for ease of upgradeability in the future. Because it's retarded easy to pop in another GPU card or some extra RAM, and not too hard to pop in another hard drive. A bit harder to dick around with thermal paste and put put a new CPU in, if you're not familiar with it.

Also, if you like AMD and you're not trying to break the bank with this build, I'd suggest checking out ebay for some of the used R9 cards. Lots of bitcoin miners have been selling used AMD cards since the price of bitcoins has stayed lower and sometimes you can find some really good deals.

One more thing. If you're building a gaming rig, remember to get extra cooling for your rig. You don't need water cooling, but a few extra case fans and some of the larger heat sinks for CPUs are helpful. The stock ones are kind of shitty sometimes. I've got a Cool Master on mine and it's great.

That fucking game. It was 3 discs on PS1.

I spent hours playing this game everyday after high school. One day I came home and tried to load up my save game (I was on 3rd disc) and my memory card said it was corrupted and wouldn't load save game data. I threw the game into the trash and never touched it again.

Oh how I miss my Chocobo racing!

PS if anyone plays DayZ standalone on Steam, PM me your gamer tags! Lets play!

The bottleneck in your system has been your GPU and not your CPU, but you recommend spending more on a CPU and going cheaper on a GPU...? That seems backwards to me. When you say that you haven't had any other games max out your GPU, what settings are you playing on?

I mean, I get what you're saying in terms of it being 'easier' to upgrade, but you can get a really solid i5 cpu for like $250 and I think it's a lot better to start off with a solid GPU than to just plan on doing a crossfire or SLI down the road, that's a really non-cost effective way to get performance, isn't it? You'll have to buy 2x the card for what... 30% improved performance? The whole under-buy now because it's easier to upgrade that part later.... nah man, just buy a good card now and not have to worry about it.

100% agree on getting a solid power supply tho. Make sure it's hefty when you pick it up, like 5-6 pounds. 750-800w will do the trick.

I spent about $800 on my rig last year and it was mid-tier then. I plan to upgrade my GPU later this year. The reason I suggest a cheaper GPU now is because like I said I've only hit a bottleneck on 1 game, and that is an unoptimized game that is in early Alpha and is being developed to run on high-end gaming PCs that will be released around 2016.

I haven't bottlenecked on any current generation games, and I play most on high or max settings. Both AMD and Nvidia are releasing new GPUs at a fairly regular pace which drives down the price of the old ones. IMHO, it's better to buy a cheaper GPU now, enjoy current games available and then upgrade in a couple of years when you need it for the generation of games being released then. Having a better CPU and PSU will allow you to do that easier and with less expense over the long run.

Basically my advice is for people looking to build a rig below $1k and get the most bang out of their buck.

Your mom is your girl you dumb bitch.

Give me a minute, fillin her up with my load...

Say hello to your new brother :cool2:

I'm jumping into this without reading too much... but here's what I did OP,

Went here,
NCIX PC Builder- Customize and build your perfect Gaming Computer.

Picked the i7 pre-built, you have to go NVIDIA/Intel... they're just the best and they dominate the market. You'll want to compare prices on newegg for the major parts(or the entire build). I had ncix build and test the system pre-ship so that I wasn't delivered a lemon.

After about 2 years you'll want to upgrade the video card, sell the old one on classifieds(or keep as a backup, or.. I just upgrade my family with hand me downs).

Most important thing on shopping for PC's, there's always a sweet spot where there's a big price decrease while also keeping in the top 10%-15% of performance available. You'll need to scan a few prices and benchmark charts but you'll save several hundred dollars. At the very least do this for CPU & GPU.

However, If you're PC smart -> Classifieds and scrape/automate alerts when new ads show up for "i7", "gaming", "corsair", NVIDIA XXX, 'insert high end pc terms'... usually only enthusiasts even bother putting in these terms and you usually need to pick it up within 30 minutes of the posting if it's that good of a deal. Classifieds have the absolute best deals, take proper precautions though. Unbelievable shit like this can happen.

Gonna look like a dumbass, but I'll live: Had a relatively new PC; bought Starcraft 2 when it came out; wouldn't work for my video card; last PC game I'll ever purchase.

I know its my fault, but back then I just wasn't savvy enough to do the tech analysis (I was: "does it work for Windows 7?"), and even now, I'm not sure I care to. I suspect I'm not alone on that.

I literally just bought Skyrim like 20min ago. And the other day a friend gifted me Hotline Miami. Clearly PC gaming is thriving.

I did skyrim on xbox360, loved it and would still love to play, fantastic game. I was a skyrim & borderlands freak... but I'm completely mobile now. Sold off literally all my fixed possessions (furniture etc), sold my house, my gaming system, all of my PCs & computer equipment and have gone completely mobile.

Do those games these days require serious gaming-style setups? Can I set up my laptop to enable that and will it work for more than 3 months before its outdated? I'll upgrade my cards etc but I figured I'd have to do it so often for new game releases that it'd become a joke.

Add some wheels to it and you are mobile AND you can play skyrim.

ps: turn the sound off when watching. Big fail on that part.
