There's this little girl missing in California which is terrible...

California girl, 8, disappears after playing with friend - CNN.com

beyond the obvious bit about the girl missing, the part in the story that irked me the most was this...

"The mobile home park has less than 100 units. There are about 80 registered sex offenders living in a five-mile radius around it."

WTF? Talk about pervert central. Knowing this, how could anyone let their kids out of sight in such a neighborhood?

In other news a 23 year old in Massachusetts decapitated his 5 year old sister in front of police officers.

Oh, what a wonderful world.

Maynard was right.

I should put that on a T shirt.

What kind of fucking parents let their 8 year old out on her/their own.

Didn't you go out when you were 8? I was out when I was 5. My son is 7 and is allowed out into the mini neighborhood. (we have a master plan community with a bunch of mini neighborhoods.) Keeping them inside is like keeping them imprisoned. Besides, the reality of them being kidnapped by strangers is 1 in 500K. Kids these days: facts and fictions ... - Google Book Search

When we were kids that age and younger we were all over the neighborhood on our own. Nothing bad ever happened. It took a fellow named Clifford Olson to destroy that innocence. Despite that, kids will be kids and need to be out playing with their friends so you can't really expect to keep them under lock and key. Kids should be able to play on their street without worrying about them being abducted. Unfortunately that's not always the case.

Jon's right. People are fucking sick. I'm a bit of a news junkie, but some days it leaves me far more depressed than it's worth.

We were only allowed out if two of us were together otherwise if we got caught we'd cop a flogging, with shit like this going on these days I certainly understand why we copped those floggings.

Well shit luck to this poor lil girl she's the 1 in 500k eh!

She should have at least been with someone.

Yeah Definitely but these days they should at least be with another person, certainly not on their own.

Oh and this is just one kidnapping that the media decided to report.

Just check any big city you'll find thats the case. I remember I checked a friends neighboor in sacramento and it was around 1 or 200.

But that list isn't just filled with old creeps. Some of them might be young guys like you and me who just forgot to check the ID....

Nothing to note for my current zip code. Searched for my zip back home and found my dentist.

full ack on that one. I remember 2-3 dudes back then in elementary where the parents didnt let them do anything on their own. They're still 90% dependent form their parents.. and they're about 20-21 now.

I dont really know how it is over there, but if you live in rather good neighborhoods the best thing to do is to educate them on how to stay out of bad situations and not to lock them up.

On a side note: I agree, People are sick.

So what should we do? Keep them in house and let them play videogames?

When are they allowed to go outside? when they are 16/18?
Tell me please so I can be a better parent.

True dat.

We let him out into the neighborhood when he was 6 (he was crawling the walls and begging to go out) but we gave him a walkie talkie so we could talk to him and he could tell us which house he was at. He also knows that if a stranger OR EVEN SOMEONE HE KNOWS tries to pick him up and take him somewhere he is supposed to kick, scream, punch, scratch and yell bloody murder. I told him it's the only time he's allowed to do that. He also knows no one is allowed to touch his penis or heiny and he's not allowed to touch anyone elses.

Really it's about making them aware and yes, they will need to be self sufficent.
