In the EUSSR
I just watched The Machinist (great movie!) and was trying to remember what was the longest period I've been without sleep - think it's 48 hours straight when doing an overnight guard duty when in the army. Every two weeks I used to have to get up at 3am to catch a plane to Romania and sometimes I'd just stay up b/c it felt terrible to wake-up after maybe 3 or 4 hours sleep. I don't thrive without sleep.

Most people really suffer if they go without sleep for more than a few days.

What's the longest you haven't slept? Do we have any insomniacs amongst us? And if you are an insomniac is it because you're suppressing guilt after that hit and run you did???

Close to 3 Days during army training. Also came close to hyperthermia (God damn Quebec weather)

Maybe 30 hours. I can't function if I don't sleep. It's like a total brain meltdown. I can't remember the simplest things, like what the fuck I walked into the room for.

I got annoyed when I have to sleep. I have too much to do.

Some guys have gone past 36 hours? I remember going to university and then doing night shift stocking shelves and then going back to class in the morning again.

I did this a couple of times. I stopped because when I would try to eat some food, I would fall asleep while trying to swallow food and I would start to choke.

Really weird things start to happen when you're sleep deprived. I don't blame anybody if nobody believes this.

76 hours all in front of my imac ... publishing deadline in '02 or '03. One of the main reasons I got out of graphic design and hate apples so much.

A severe lack of sleep will do some crazy shit to you ... I was in tears at one point. I do still pull the occasional allnighter these days just to remind me I'm not old yet. Nothing over 36 hours though.

7 days.

I was 20 and had no help outside of caffeine. All I did was sit in front of my computer other than getting something to eat and use the bathroom. I don't think I would have made it past 72 hours if I had to do anything more physical than that.

I'm not sure I ever made it over 30. I just have to at least sleep a couple hours.

Tony Wright

"Wright claims that by reverting to a biochemically complex diet of raw foods approximating that eaten by our forest dwelling ancestors, he is able to perform such feats of deliberate insomnia.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Wright_(sleep_deprivation)#cite_note-2 He also asserts that his motivation for breaking the world sleep deprivation record was neither fame nor fortune. Rather, he claims his intention was to promote his radical theories of human neurological degeneration that are proposed in his self published book, Left In The Dark, which he says are revolutionising mankind's ability to comprehend its own largely dysfunctional behaviour."

32 hours driving home from Colorado State after freshman and sophomore years (1987-88).

Did a drive-away both times. Can you imagine letting some random Whitesnake-listening sleep-deprived college kid drive your car across country, and paying for the service?
