Here's the thing. There's two things that LOST was always about, the mystery of the island and the characters. The end wrapped up the character piece more or less, purgatory nonsense aside, but did jack shit to even remotely wrap anything up about the mystery of the island.
To me, even more so then before, knowing now that everything on that island was irrelevant to the "end" makes it even more interesting to me. Some remote island that just has crazy shit going down on it for thousands of years in a cyclical nature. All of our characters just met each other there and were simply passing through it all. It ends up coming back full circle to being unsatisfied that this crazy wasn't explained further.
People will jump to say "it's a mystery you're not supposed to know all the answers" but I think that's unfair to those that watch it for that. It's always been about both the island and the characters.
If you watched the show from the start there is no doubt that you would be emotionally touched by this ending episode. They played everyone by taking every emotional connection made throughout the entire series and put them all together in a happily ever after everyone hugs each other reality (so to speak). This is still at its core just poor writing regardless of how clever it was done and after the euphoria wears off I think a lot of people will feel a bit disappointed still. Cleverly unimaginative if ever a thing were to exist.
I couldn't honestly tell you if I would ever tell someone to watch the entire series from start to finish. Maybe seasons 1-3.
While I may be "emotionally" satisfied by that ending, I was certainly not intellectually satisfied.
