Made money with Adsense -- details inside!

I like your site, even if the revenue is lacking. Promote the shit out of it on MySpace and any teenybopper sites you can find and you could easily start making that $1.68/hour. I know that's not much, but any site that can passively generate $30-50/day is nice. Then you just replicate and boom - you have the makings for your first ebook. =P

Thanks for the positive replies, guys. I'm up to $5.46 total ;)

My CTR for those two channels is 3.4% and 2% respectively (200x200, footer) and oops I have the sidebar on the same channel as the footer I think. Oh well, I'll have to separate that.

Yeah I've got about 100-150 more "parts" I'm going to be adding in the next couple days, and I'm going to add some way to put some news on the front page... maybe gather some e-mail addresses so I can ping people when I do updates, shit like that.

I also plan to do a Facebook plugin and integrate some other social networks when I can.

As for the site looking professional, I really appreciate that comment. I've done a few other things before, including maintaining a gaming site for the past 6 years, and a fan site for the upcoming game Rock Band (appropriately named rockbandfan) but ezSmiley is the first unique thing I've done (my own code, not using Wordpress, vbulletin, phpbb) , and it's my best work so far.

I think the 200x200 spot on the front page would be better served by some kind of affiliate deal, but I'm not sure what would be best. I'm thinking of doing round-robin ads in that spot and doing a lot of experimentation.

And wtf, that house has separate air conditioners for each room? Couldn't afford central air conditioning in your 2 million dollar mansion?

Supergeek, nice job... both on your site and on the quick buck-sixty-eight.

I recall how pumped I was with the 1st dollar I made off the innernets. 'Twas like manna from heaven.

Your enthusiasm is well deserved. Keep it up!

This thread fails to deliver.

...You didn't tell us how you made that $1.68!

"Details inside" my ass.

lol that cracked me up. I was all pissed about that I took the bait too and then I realized I was getting all pissed about him not sharing his $1.68 secret. :P

EDIT: Well this will teach me not to read all the way to the bottom first.

I like the idea too, just work on the volume and variety and you could be banking in no time! Good job.

I'm in the same boat as you with the "new to adsense" thing. I must say good job, it's an achievement to say the least.

Just try to maintain this or improve on a daily basis, it'll have its ups and downs like most things but in the end if you put in the work and take advice well you'll end up on top :)

My site currently makes between $2 and $4 each day.

Wow, you guys are such assholes to the other newbs I just didn't expect this overwhelmingly favorable response... after I took my lumps in the first couple responses, heh.

Anyway, I'm up to $5.59 total, and I do plan to implement a lot of the suggestions in this thread. A couple questions though:

change the title to something more convenient

I thought the domain name was awesome; short and to the point. What would be a better title?

adding links

I plan to add more content to the site (history of the emoticon, the history of the smiley since it just celebrated its 20 year birthday or whatever, text smileys, the text cows, shit like that). But what about external links? There are a lot of smiley sites out there, but I don't really want to send my viewers to competiting sites.... Same with those damn Google ads, they're all for competing sites.

You didn't enter by asking lame shit questions, you already had a finalized idea. Big difference ;)

Uh, oh, noob alert...you're kinda putting me in an awkward position here...should I start flaming you or not...how the fuck can you make such a sweet little site, yet not know the difference between a domain and a title ?! Anyway, the domain is ok, title needs to be changed into something like "Ajax Smiley Generator" or "Live Smiley Generator".

Oh, I made it off the site I launched yesterday. I didn't want to shamelessly plug my own site, so I'll do it without a link: ezsmiley.com

Cool site, I made a Dr. Marvin Monroe.

FYI the forum code didn't work, I had to throw the smiley up on my own server.

Anyways...

Oh, yeah "the best and easiest to use blah blah" is kind of long. I thought he was just referring to the "ezSmiley" part of the title. Yeah, the full title could be reworded. I'll take that under advisement.

Hmm, thanks for the heads-up, I'll check it out.

Oh, and for everyone's enjoyment: boobies.

Look at all that shit on that rock!

"Wow, you guys are such assholes to the other newbs I just didn't expect this overwhelmingly favorable response..."

WF'ers have gotten jaded, they just assumed your post was worthless self-promotion.

Once we saw your site, it was obviously a quality site that any IM can learn from.

One thing, your CTR should be higher. Although your placement is in a hotspot --> my eyes are drawn towards the middle. Try moving it around. Split test it in different positions. My first instinct would be to move the ad block near the center. I would also try a bigger ad block.

test test test. Whatever profit your first draft gets should easily get doubled after split testing positions/colors/and possibly copy.

I'm not happy until I hit 18 to 30% CTR. Not always possible, but usually you can.

+rep for hottest boobies on a shit covered rock in history

Oh yeah, and for another example of "think outside the box fucktard". You just gave me about 40 ideas for ways to make Ajax customizable stuff that people might actually pay for.

Cool, cept when I tried to upload the Smiley I made on imageshack, it never finished loading, and when I did upload it on another free upload service, it said the image was corrupted or something.

Your site has evil smileys!

I know, rite? This was a "proof of concept" site... I have so many ideas, I wish I had the money to pay some Indians 20 cents an hour to code all of them.

Ok, I'll do more testing.

As it is, for linking, vbulletin forums (and probably others) don't like the dynamic URL, and I had an error in my URLs too! I suck. I'm thinking I'll make TinyURLs for the images, and just expire URLs that aren't accessed after 60 days.... and redirect to a tiny banner ad! That could actually be a good way to bring people back to the site.

How about collecting completed smileys off your users?

- Make a "most popular smileys" box somewhere.
- Make a "send this smiley to a friend" email send thingy with your site in the sig
