Maybe this affiliate Marketing thing is overrated?

Instead of wondering about how much money others are making why don't you wonder about what you've attempted to do so far to become profitable in this business and why it hasn't worked out?

So, what have you tried so far?

reading ebooks is hard job bud.

Yeah, because PPC is the only way to market affiliate products.

But who cares? According to this article on entrepreneur.com, affiliate marketing is the absolute laziest way to make money online - who wants to be considered lazy? I'm gonna go get a 9-5 right away.

thanks for the article link, the entire thing is asinine.

lol I love wickedfire. Damn I missed the sarcasm. On a serious note man, I know where you stand. Most people do not start off making money, at least nothing to live off of. It also is up to what you try to do. YOu could do PPC, but you do have to spend the money to make the money. You could lose hundreds of dollars tweaking the keywords, bids, split testing ads, before you finally get it targeted to converting visitors to make up that loss. Not every offer will profit you. PPC = lose money. Those who succeed at PPC know how to fine-tune and split test the keywords/ads to turn it into profits. Some marketers toss hundreds of dollars into campaigns, knowing it isnt going to profit, but they know once they get it fine-tuned it will make up the losses, then tons more.

You could go on to free traffic. You still have to buy the domains. I just started a site a few weeks ago, and get 100+ hits a day all on free traffic. I am still testing out with landing page options, and campaign offers on which ones convert best. I spent $6.99 on the domain, and made that back on the 2nd day. So if you want free traffic, check out SEO and find out how to rank well on search engines. Also theres other methods like video marketing, ect. Consumes time, but its free. But again, nothing is free because you had to buy the domain. If you are not willing to spend $7 on a domain name, then you are not willing to make money.

You could use the same tactics (SEO) to rank well for keywords targeting a specific niche. Run a phpbay or BANS on that site that uses the Ebay Partner network. This is the first active month of my phpbay site, I made $58 so far this month. All Free Traffic! But again, nothing is free.. I spent what, $49 on phpbay (right before they raised the price), and $6.99 for that domain.. So I am at about a $2 profit. Next month I am shooting for $100, I am still tweaking keywords and getting my ranks up. Some keywords im 1st, 2nd or 3rd page, others I am nowhere to be found. My goal is $400 a month average in 6 months for that site..

You see what i am getting at? There are options out there for those who don't want to go broke getting to a good income. But you have to spend money to make money. I spent $5 for hosting, bought 2 domains this month for $13.98, phpbay for $49. Total spent = $67. Not that much at all, and lets just say I EASILY made that back in no time. I consider that the free method. Yeah I spent the cash on phpbay, but it is for life, so every thing after its paid off ($49) is pure profit. Minus my hosting at $5 a month, and minus the domains that I dont have to worry about for a year. $10 each year for a domain.

If you are scared to spend some money, then you are in the wrong place. AM is where its at if you are into this sort of thing. The reason you aren't making money is you arent trying hard enough and are scared to buy an extra domain, or a script like phpbay. Dont eat out for a while and you wont notice a difference.

I'm beginning to wonder how much money people on this forum are actually making with this AM thing.

I'm beginning to think that unless you have a substantial amount to spend on a PPC campaign, your chances of actually making it maybe slim to none.

Correction: Chances of making it QUICK and EASY are slim to none. I spoke to one guy early on who said he didn't use PPC and had to work for damn near 9 months before his collection of sites started profiting equal to what made at a 9-5.

I went the other route.

First month lost hundreds in PPC, 2nd month broke even, 3rd month made meager profits. Fast forward to current month, between 3 networks I'm profiting an average of $150/day. Spread over 31 days that more than makes up for the salary my wife gave up when she decided to go to grad school.

Go out and rent "The Robinsons", and pay special attention to the song and quote at the end of the movie. 70 years ago guys were in our shoes and now they literally have kingdoms named after them.

i blow most of my profits trying to make other niches work.. so i make shit all. even though i have had 5 figure cheques. The money i actually save comes from selling my own products online.

Man putting 100k dollars into something that only gets me 150k and which my credit card fronts the bill really sucks!!

you find me another businss where for a few measly hundred dollars you can literally setup shop. When I see comments like this I can't help wonder if people who are even factoring in domain costs of a new project at $10 have ever worked in the corporate world.

It takes risk to start your own buisness- however any store owner you see invested a hell of a lot more than a few hundred dollars opening their bagel/sandwhich/dry cleaners/record store- they signed multiple year leases to the tune of $XX,XXX-$XXX,XXX

Affiliate marketing is hands down the cheapest possible business to enter.

Affiliate marketers are always talking about "i made 2 million dollars this month" how much you make profit??? " i lost 2k" su!

I would actually like to hear a more balanced amount of posts on AM results. Obviously some people are great at it and find their niche(s). But I'm guessing that many here are suffering.. maybe. I know that it's going to be very easy to shout "I made $XXXXX this month, so you suck!" if you were successful, but unsuccessful people tend to be more quiet about failure. I currently make money online through other means, but have been thinking about doing AM for some time. I have zero problem with working my ass right off.. I can tell you that and I have lots of technical skills. I have no problem wasting tons of time working on something - just for the potential of payoff. I do have a problem with wasting thousands of dollars though. I sometimes lack a sense of what people want to buy often. I'm probably not a natural salesman. On another note, I have a decently successful online biz at the moment. All i gotta say is that the internet is an amazing place to make money if you are willing to sacrifice massive amounts of time to learn. But you gotta like learning, and learning independently. I love any business where the main investment is time and not capital.. that is by far the most important thing to me. Then if you end up making money you can feel ok about spending more money on the project.

I know that it's going to be very easy to shout "I made $XXXXX this month, so you suck!"

I think it might be the opposite. Those that make big money might be inclined to keep their methods to themselves and their mouths shut. Some do try to milk other affiliates for camps or whatever, but who knows how much they are really making or not making on AM.

Being 18, and grossing over 50k this year, not overrated.. at least I don't think so. Do you?

*nods*
All those posers that hold up pictures of their five and six figure cheques for the month... I just sit there and wonder what percentage of that was spent on the PPC that got them there. 90, 95 percent?

this is a business where the only thing you can count on is that the big 'look at me' bloggers are *NOT* the ones making any real money, at least in terms of what percentile they fall into though they certainly like to tell you otherwise.

Let me know when John Chow or Shoemoney buys something Italian to drive around in.

With replication of campaigns/creative/pages/ideas so readily and quickly available top affiliates have zero incentive to talk about their success, it's at best a break even and more than likely gets them on the radar of those looking to fast-follow.

It's not like one owns a giant concrete business with 200+ trucks where a potential competitor can't jump into business next to them overnight.

I will point out not all bloggers are like that ;)
