I read somewhere that notch (the guy that made it) owned 71% of it. So he just became a billionaire. And then he wrote a blog post saying it wasn't about the money and now he is going to make small games and if they get popular abandon it. lolwut. Sounds a lot like the flappy bird guy.
"I'm selling out, but I assure you, I'm not selling out. Please continue to give me your money on my next ventures."
If you have kids, they're probably in love with the game. It's like Pokemon + Legos + Saturday TV (24/7 with youtube and twitch streaming) = Minecraft.
He didn't need that money to be hugely rich. The guy's net annual income was 100 million dollars in 2012. Let me repeat that. It was 100 million dollars , for one year, for one person.
But I guess it's worthless because he wasn't running dating campaigns or selling get your dick bigger ebooks. He just what, made a fucking game. what a loser.

I was just noting that he seems a bit irrational.
And additionally, like the flappy bird guy, overly concerned with what people think of him and seems to be unable to deal with it.
If it wasn't about the money, he could have made a blog post thanking everybody and then saying he was going to donate it all. But he didn't do anything like that.
Isn't it funny how some people are so afraid of the appearance of selling out? What does this guy care if 20 million 12 year olds think he's a sellout anyway?

I don't play anymore but Minecraft is a great game. Hosted a server for a bit and then played on another friends server for another bit... if you like gaming at all, I highly recommend playing with a few good friend of yours on the survival mode.
Here's some of the things I built, exclusively in survival mode, block by block...
Survival, solo..
Survival, my server, one friend who played build his castle next to mine(not shown)
This was a 15 or so player server with local friends, some people built underground/underwater railroads, cities, mayan temples, it was crazy.
Display room for the Ender egg, it's the novelty item you receive upon beating the last boss... My friends server had zoning protection mods, so no one could get behind the glass
Anyways, this was most of my very pleasurable minecraft experience...
Anyone willing to call him a sell out for selling a hobby coded game for $2.5B needs to be more honest with themselves.

Not so fast. He owes about 56% of that to the Swedish government. He didn't build that!
