I giant that changed the way that teams attacked the rim against the Jazz (456 in one season alone). Still wouldn't trade for him. Howard blocks shots and will make up for Nash's now piss poor defense one on one as the player he guards make it to the rim. Serge Ibaka can do that for a lot less. Still doesn't make Howard a great center or player. When he can be defensive player of the year and pour in 30 points a game, come and talk to me (His Airness did it a few times).
Grind has this one right; this team has a lot more potential to implode with the addition of Howard.

Let's get this straight: On offense, the LAL can trot out 4 first-class offensive players and on D they've got Howard, Artest, Kobe, and a top defensive coach.

Or maybe the fact that both Nash and Kobe need to dominate the ball to be effective? That should work out well. Or maybe the fact that Kobe won't pass the ball at crunch time even though his effectiveness in such situations is borderline pathetic (28% shooting percentage in playoff crunch time situations)? When has Kobe ever played with a top-notch PG? Kobe and Nash talked it out prior to Nash approving the trade so I think they'd be able to work it out. Kobe was effective enough while playing with Shaq dominating the ball back in the day. Lastly, you don't think those crunch time percentages would go up with Howard and Nash deflecting attention?

Talk is cheap. I can see Nash letting go a bit, but not Kobe. Nash dominates possession to make others better, Kobe just dominates possession. The only one who benefits from Nash is Howard, Gasol etc.
Short answer - no. Why you might ask? All three of them and their performances are in direct relation to how much possession they have. Nash needs the ball to create, Howard needs the ball to open it up for others and score himself - Kobe just needs and demands the ball all the time.
Kobe is the cog that doesn't fit and when and if it all goes ass up, Kobe will start pointing fingers telling everyone what is wrong. The difference between this team and the Heat, is that D-wade and Bosh finally fell into being the supporting cast for Lebron. It isn't going to happen in LA because of the way Kobe plays the game. Sure, they may have a great regular season, but when crunch time comes at playoff time, it will simply turn into the Kobe show again because he won't have it any other way.
As it stands right now, Kobe is a bad fit for this team, with this particular roster.
I agree with your main thesis - it's going to depend on whether or not Kobe can play off the ball. Personally, I think he can, at least to a workable extent. Here's a decent read on the subject:

Kobe might think he needs to, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be more effective with Nash setting him up.
I'm a Celtics fan, but also Nash is a guy who I would like to see get a ring at this point.
The NBA has a salary cap though. If a small market like Memphis had a baseball team they wouldn't be able to do the equivalent of signing Randolph, Gay, and Marc Gasol to new contracts. Without the cap, a big market team like Boston could have easily signed someone like Gasol or Andrew Bogut, instead of Brandon Bass or whoever.

Yes, no, maybe. If someone like Kyle Korver gets the ball outside, people will assume he is going to shoot it and then defend him accordingly. Nash's quickness and passing abilities can make it easier for him to get open shots.
nash's been in the league for how long and is undersized still finds a way to the basket. He has extremely high basketball IQ.
