Neat way to destroy poverty once and for all

and if you think about it - it's a good article topic b/c it gets the peasants all riled up

$20/hour = 600 baht/hour. Say a 10 hour day, so 6000 baht/day.

Holy fuck would minimum wage folks ever be happy if that happened. The government recently raised the minimum wage from 200 to 300 baht/day. Imagine if overnight they started getting 6000 baht?

Monsanto is fucking us. Let's burn their head off to the ground.

They have already nearly driven the honey bee population to near extinction (ok only killed 80 to 90%) So I am not really sure what you're talking about. They love us. They are disrupting the food chain because they love us.

I wish they would raise the minimum wage to $10+ so people would stop bitching about it and finally learn our trajectory will emulate Australia and overall nothing would change other than the value of a dollar.

learning isn't their long suit.

There is no end to poverty, there will always be poor people, ether due to things outside of their control that put them at a disadvantage in the race or due to lack of drive/discipline... the poor will always be with us. Been that way since the beginning of the human race. One caveman got to eat meat because he was strong and a good hunter, his neighbor was not as fortunate and his line died out. The only difference is that now they linger on through social aid.

Not judging the poor, I think there are legitimate victims. But there are also lazy people with their hands out looking to get something for nothing. If they want that kind of a pay increase (beyond what inflation dictates) then they need to acquire more skills.

From wiki about Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC):

The group was founded with funding from the labor union HERE

From Dollars and Sense* (a site friendly to unions):

Today, ROC-NY is a small organization with only a few hundred members, but it operates as if it were a major union with thousands of members and a big treasury. It's simultaneously an educational center; an informal union fighting for workers' rights outside the usual legal framework; an organizer of demonstrations and media pressure in support of workers vulnerable to exploitation; a creator of a worker-owned cooperative business; and a bridge to regular membership in unions like HERE. The organization has crafted a complex and sophisticated strategy to reach workers. Its objective is no less ambitious than to organize all unorganized restaurant workers in New York City.

* You'll find comments from one of the folks who started ROC (Saru Jayaraman) on this page.

From crainsnewyork.com:

Restaurateurs cringe at the prospect of a ROC campaign, which often includes noisy and prolonged protests outside the eatery. Settling is often the less expensive option for restaurateurs mindful of their brand's image and the cost of a long court fight.

From crainsnewyork.com about ROC-NY:

ROC NY has made its mark in the city by targeting high-profile restaurateurs, including Daniel Boulud and Alan Stillman. The group has won nine campaigns in all, securing $5 million in settlements from restaurants accused of sexual harassment, wage and hour violations, and discrimination.

So to be fair, the folks at ROC are acting rationally. There's a big incentive for them to spread economic fallacies under the guise of a study.

Remember, incentives and disincentives.

Anyway, the problem with raising the minimum wage too much is that you have to raise it for everyone else, too. It create a sudden financial burden on the employer, resulting in job loss and other problems.

In online journalism, there's no such thing as liberal or conservative news. Anything that gets clicks & pageviews will be posted, regardless if the site is liberal or conservative.

You guys are all wrong. If you actually read the article you will see that $10 is far too low to work. They have to raise it to $10.10 per hour. This extra 10 cents makes all the difference. $20 is way too high. $10 a hair too low. $10.10 is just right. These guys have really smart college educated employees with Lib Arts degrees (some with double majors) so they obviously are the cream of the crop. I've read the article a few times and am starting to follow the logic. Do you even economics bros?

Right - the minimum wage is the lowest possible amount that a company is willing to pay an employee for their labor. If you are an individual receiving that for your labor, and that's not okay with you, then you ought to gather the skills for a higher paying job.

A commenter made the argument that corporations like walmart are propping themselves up on welfare and food stamps, costing taxpayers money (which is funny considering who pays the bulk of taxes in this country).

Walmart itself is basically a welfare program - it's the easiest fucking job to get in the universe. Citizens are so complacent, they want their job to be as easy as possible to get and they want to be able to live their ideal lifestyle on it.

We would all be able to live in a world with all of our basic needs met if only our collective intelligence was just a little bit higher.
