It's called "Shotspotter", and it allows the police to zero in with pinpoint accuracy on locations where gunfire has been detected.

A 2006 study of test shots fired at the Charleston Navy Yard, conducted at the company’s request and financed by the National Institute of Justice, found that ShotSpotter correctly detected 99.6 percent of 234 gunshots at 23 firing locations. The system also located 90.9 percent of the shots to within 40 feet.

Sam Sutter, the district attorney in Bristol County, Mass., called ShotSpotter “an extremely valuable tool” that had helped his office bring charges in four nonfatal shootings.

“In my view legally,” he said, “what is said and picked up by the ShotSpotter recording does not have the expectation of privacy because it’s said out in public, and so I think that will turn out to be admissible evidence.”

James G. Beldock, a vice president at ShotSpotter, said that the system was not intended to record anything except gunshots and that cases like New Bedford’s were extremely rare. “There are people who perceive that these sensors are triggered by conversations, but that is just patently not true,” he said. “They don’t turn on unless they hear a gunshot.”

They can pin point the location but how can they prove who fired the shot. Lets say this machine leads them to a house with 8 people in it, who do they take to jail?

Everyone, with laws like aiding and abetting, obstruction of justice, and failure to report a felony it wouldn't be hard to round everyone up and start questioning them. Once faced with the possibility of charges (not that they would stick) they can quickly find out who was responsible and turn suspects into eye witnesses.

Police can rub some shit on your hands and it checks for gun powder residue which would be left over if you fired a gun without gloves on. It's like a drug test for gun powder. True story.

Doesn't even have to be your hands, gun shot residue (GSR) gets everywhere, on your clothes, your face, everyfucking where.

Whenever I shoot anybody, I do it completely naked, and then I treat myself to a day at the spa to get rid of any lingering GSR.

Minneapolis has had ShotSpotter set up in parts of the city since 2007.

It is supposed to be able to tell the difference between gun shots and other loud bangs like fireworks.

I believe the Minneapolis Police recently set up their system to make some cameras in the area automatically point towards a ShotSpotter activation.

There is opportunity here, if your neighborhood has a lot of gun fire during the 4th of july... buy some cases of firecrackers and bank.

If I fired a gun 3 days ago would this test still show a positive result?
