Business & Technology | Microsoft reinvents flagship software — Windows 8 — for PCs and tablets | Seattle Times Newspaper

Q: How is Windows 8 different from Windows 7 and other previous versions of Windows?
A: Windows 8 — which is still just a code name — is the first version of Windows designed from the beginning to run on both PCs and Web tablets. It will have a touch-screen interface as well as the more traditional mouse/trackpad/keyboard interface.
Aside from the touch-screen interface, which computer makers can choose to incorporate, another noticeable difference will be the start screen, which will use "tiles" instead of icons.
That tile interface, called Metro, is similar to the one now used in Microsoft Windows Phone smartphones. The tiles can include real-time updates from applications and touching or clicking on the tiles launches the apps, which can be Web-powered or Web-connected. The interface should also allow for a faster, more fluid switching between running apps.

Still waiting for a coffee table I can run this shit on so I can snort coke, surf porn and check stats like a boss.

So that means if for example I own a website that offers upcoming games news, and someone wants to add my site to a "tile", I have the ability as the site owner/developer to configure how the tile will display data associated with my site? Like an image of the latest announced game with a div over it and the news title?

Just curious, if so that'd be pretty cool.

Yeah, basically. Although I'm sure there's going to be restrictions to what can be displayed.

This tells me you've never run Linux Mint.

I have, and for the most part usually use ubuntu 11.04 as a primary OS on my desktop...But it took me around 45 minutes to get sound to play properly out of my HDMI port on my graphics card because there wasn't an audio driver for my exact card. Ended up using a driver from a similar card with the same chipset.

The power and control you have with linux is incredible and great. User friendliness not so much, and that's what 99% of computer users want. I shouldn't had to search on google how to properly shut down fedora 15. Little things like that will quickly turn away people.

I'd like to chime in here and say that the user-friendliness of a distro is inherently dependent on the computer it's being installed on. No distro has ever recognized my wireless card properly out-of-the-box so I always have to use other computers to find a solution via command line and then transfer proprietary files over via flash drive. There are certain laptop models + distro setups that are incredibly user-friendly, but there are certainly more holes overall and Linux - largely due to this - is definitely not as user-friendly as either windows or OSX.

I'm a fucking retard, and I got Linux Mint up and running in about 7 minutes with zero issues.

Yes, using generic drivers and usually make it fairly easy to use. Like I said to get this HDMI audio to work it took some time cause there wasn't a specific driver for it. On windows 7 it just worked.

This microsoft surface shit got a lot of attention about 4 years back I think. Snagged a few domains related to it at that time, but only to let them expire a couple years later when the surface was still nowhere to be seen

The last thing I want from a newer OS is the ability to run on other minimal products. I want my desktop OS to be specifically made for my desktop.

and touchscreen will never work for me, I use way too many hotkeys.
