I know I'm opening the Pandora box just by mentioning this - but is there a way to protect the...wait...I wont say the "e" word...is there a way of protecting a text rich pdf file?

:cool2:

I would like to send out a nice info booklet for the Facebook fans, but I wouldn't want to let it get on torrents. I know someone who gets it will leak it...but if I could at least try to make it difficult for them.

What crossed my mind first was some sort of unique, generated password plus watermark. Is that even possible for a pdf file?

I'm not exactly up with the latest trends in DRM so if there's a more efficient way on protecting the file, let me know.

Yes, I know for sure that SitePoint and LoveSystems do it...

Use pdflib to generate unique PDF file for each customer that you can easily identify and sue the leaker. Give big warning on the first few pages, that you will sue and hurt their sorry asses if they leak your stuff on torrent, because you have GAY ALGORITHM to detect asshat like them.

For example.. you have the following text in your PDF:
- i am gay
- i like to fuck men
- i love being pounded in the ass

You then create synonyms for each shit
- i am {gay | fag | faggot | homo | homosexual }
- i like to {fuck | bang | do} men
- i love being pounded in the {ass | butt}

Spin the above gay combo, and generate the PDF file real time using pdflib (download link expires in xx minutes, and ask them to download, and GTFO).

Create as many as permutations (or combinations exactly) as your expected sales number, and you will be able to identify the leaker and fuck his ass.

Directory protected folder with hosted pdf? Then maybe generate a password script to generate on a cron only for facebook fans via your page? Could work!?!

Bro, I think you're really overestimating the # of people that want your ebook

2 people want my ebook broski. But I dont want them 2 piratizing it. Because I've put $4 bucks in those shits and I dont want to end up in deficit.

We cool now?

Watermark the buyer's email address into everypage of the ebook.

That also means you'll have to manually verify each buyer.

A better way of spending your time is to just focus on sales and after-sale support.
i.e: Free links/free forum support etc

oh the shithead answers.... then what happens when they use adobe acrobat to remove their email address and upload it to torrent sites? lol

There's no way to ultimately protect it you dumb shit. The point was to make it harder for them and not waste time.

Obviously it's better than your dumbass solution. He'd already got his refund by the find you found out who that fucker is, fuckface.

How's your new Rolex holding up you hypocritical piece of shit?
Being prettier than average Singaporeans is some accomplishment huh.

LOL, dumb ass solution, eh? I leave it to others to judge whether it's good or not. Meanwhile, are you Malay? Just curious.

Nobody even read your solution, that's why you had to result to throwing insults and BEGGING people to read your "spinning method".

no comment on my gay algo? wtf.

Pathetic. You're 29, you don't party, and all you do is STS and call people that disagree with you "faggots", Mr Know-it-all fuck all.

You're the kind of loser that die alone. Don't believe me? Ask your mom upstairs.

Make something out of your life instead of pretending you do watersports rocking expensive watches on an internet forum.

Not sure, but does Adobe allow for code to get executed within the PDF? ActionScript maybe, for example? If so, maybe code something in that dictates the exact server the eBook can be downloaded from. If it's downloaded from anywhere else, give an error saying to login with your customer account to download.

Or is there maybe an ionCube for PDFs? With ionCube, you encode everything, and the software will only run with a valid license file, which you can lock down to a specific MAC address. This way, each time someone downloads the PDF, it'd be locked to their specific MAC address.

I don't know. I don't do eBooks, so I don't have the slightest clue as to what I'm talking about.

Im still saying there has to be a way to generate passwords for users of a page to access a directory. If the page is hosted onto fb with an app this is what I see happens.

1. User likes facebook page
2. User sees ebook tab (application)
3. User goes to tab and sees hosted page to type in email address for free download
4. User gets script generated password that protects the directory in which the ebook is located.
5. User uses password to login and download

* Script should be able to generate unique passwords at all time.
* Script should be able to protect the directory
* Script should not be difficult to integrate. There has to be something out here.

Or just appreciate the fact that someone thinks that your e-book is worth pirating, and write the thing based around bringing money back to you/stop making a problem out of an opportunity.

QFT

You can make a shitload of money by allowing your ebook to be pirated- or better yet, throwing it on all the torrent/warez sites yourself. Just write it with that in mind, fill it up with affiliate links and write it in a way that makes people want to click them. Wider audience = more monies.
