Con: Think: Greece in the EU.

WTF are you thinking???

Wow. That isn't even close to a valid comparison. That being said there is a high amount of poverty and a lot to clean up, but think about Detroit, that's probably even worse.

Puerto could serve as a massive hub for intra-american trade.

We already own Puerto rico why give them anything more than what they get now there is no upside just more downsides. The costs of the social programs alone would be astronomical. Plus then we would have an odd number of states. 50 states has a nice ring to it. 51 does not

You're treating Puerto Ricans as if they are livestock. If there is a healthy economy and well developed infrastructure, the amount of trade going through there would increase dramatically.

EDIT: Which come from social programs

You act like it already doesn't. All federal laws apply to PR and that includes trade laws. Statehood wouldn't do much.

The infrastructure in Puerto Rico sucks balls. An improved infrastructure means more capacity and efficiency.

Giving it statehood would allow more ease for federal funding to improve their infrastructure, giving them more trade capacity.

Also, it's not right to only reap their benefits without returning anything.

So pretty much what your saying is you guys suck at what you do now but if you can suck of that sweet government tit you will try to earn the money back? Sorry brah but if we wanted that we would turn Mexico into a state and strip it of all its natural resources long before we give a rats ass about PR

1. You're assuming I'm Puerto Rican, which I'm not.

2. Development requires investment. Investing in PR would bring mutual benefits. Puerto Rican people aren't concerned about bringing money into the US; we have to spark the interest by investing and thus creating jobs.

3. You just made yourself sound like a complete idiot.

Infrastructure is falling apart in the US as well. The money would be better spent fixing the the failing infrastructure in the US than making PR a state then fixing theirs.

True, but there is no given time period in this debate for when Puerto Should become a state. We could be talking tomorrow or 10 years down the line.

10 years wouldn't even be enough to fix what's wrong with ours. That was only 1 example of a bunch of things that are wrong. We'll all be dead by the time all the problems are fixed if they ever are.

hmm. Point taken, however also consider that Puerto Ricans are Americans as well.

So their problems are also our problems.

no srsly. make it a state. then America would have one state where the chicks aren't over 400 pounds.
