RANT ALERT! :angrysoapbox_sml:

Fell through on an article writing job for a client (was unable to write). Client paid $300 in advance. Took me 3 tries to refund that money, because of how easy paypal is to use, but the money was refunded. Not only this, but I refunded more than the original amount, to cover any fees that Paypal would take off once the original client received the money back.

The client was mad, wanted answers, and kept getting more steamed up. :angryfire:
So I offer to write them the original articles for free. That's not enough, still steamed up. :angryfire: So I offer another 50+ free articles on top of this. :angryfire: Not enough still. So guess what? #*ck it, I throw in 400 free articles, NO joke.

Client gets happy. Client thinks that is how things should be done. Client accepts, although they are still nosing around for more answers.

So what does client do? Client decides that it's ok to request a few articles. I say my max output for now is about 15 per day (@ 500 words each). So what does client do? Client starts sending out requests from every which way....not only for articles, but for their damn COLLEGE HOMEWORK!

No joke, the client asked me to write up an analysis of an analysis of various analysis' of Hitler's foreign policy, and related economical theories. AND include a powerpoint presentation.

I told them, that I wasn't even sure if I could do this, but ended up doing it anyways. After doing that, I noticed they had sent me another email requesting re-writes. (Basically to spin articles now). I am sure that many people here could agree that article spinning is no easy feat for most writers....and here this person is asking for that now.

Not only this, but guess what the next email was requesting? A damn ebook. No joke....a full damn EBOOK related to internet marketing. So I'm supposed to sit here for free, research everything, and write up a whole ebook? For free?

Anyways, I ignored this client for a few days....contemplating whether or not I should take up those requests. Originally I offered to write some articles...simple, right? Now, suddenly I am being bombarded with complex requests, like university level dissertation, or ebooks, or article spinning.

After consulting a few people, who all agreed that I was completely being taken advantage of in an unfair way....I finally just told the client that what I originally offered, is not what they are now requesting. They said they understood, and would find another writer.

So basically it ended, but then today....I get an email saying "What if I only send you, say, ebooks? (and those are for me)"......

HONESTLY....Hitting my head against a wall wouldn't be nearly as pleasurable as it sounds right now. It's also my fault, because I offered something of a large value for free to this client to make "ammends". I guess they figured they could get chocolate milk out of the cow. But cows don't give chocolate milk, no matter what you feed them.

Anyways, whole point of this rant, is to ask you....how do you take advantage of people?

Do you milk the cow while there's still milk? And if so, do you EXPECT chocolate milk?

I don't...but you sure got taken advantage of.

I make damn sure people don't do that to me.

If you refunded the money + fees and explained that you weren't able to do the job, why didn't you just tell this "client" to piss off. If they're mad, it's best to just part ways at that point, but instead, you ended up doing more work for the idiot than if you had just done the initial job. I'm confused.

So let me get this straight, you refunded the money and then offered to do 400 FREE articles? You just asked to be taken advantage of. Your time is worth way more than that, don't bend over backwards for people if you don't absolutely have to and here, you didn't. That was all your fault.

Not my style to tell a client to "piss off". Others I spoke to were confused as well, as marketers, why I would even throw myself into such a situation. However, forums and clients are two different things. And it's even more complex if the client came from, and hired you from a forum to begin with.

Why do I need to spoil my name, just because I couldn't deliver in the first place? That's my basic thought process there, which basically is that it was my fault to begin with. Bit off more than I could chew, however, that doesn't give this client the right to request ridiculous things....almost like blackmail.

They even told me themselves that no one else would offer such things, or go to such lengths that I have. However, at this point and time I really don't care anymore, and can tell them NO, because they have spoiled my offer by making it utterly ridiculous.

you definitely deserved that one

after you refund the money you go tell him to fuck off if he keeps giving you a hard time

if you're still up for it I'll be glad to take advantage of you. I need 100 healthy recipes and cute graphics done. Please PM me with a download link by 5pm tonight (my time- and note, I won't tell you where that is! OMG lolz!111)

Go on now.

This is why client work can be a nightmare. Don't let people walk all over you. Don't work for free if you don't want to. If I was you I would have completely stopped responding after sending the refund. If he wants to try and ruin your name on a forum, just post and say what happened.

As mentioned in another reply above, the forum thing doesn't really matter anymore (IE, at this point I have learned not to let that kind of thing bother me). Also, even if I "said" what happened, it sure wouldn't lend a lot of credibility my way either way....

Some people don't mind negative feedback, and can deal with it. But that's all fine and dandy, if it's not even their fault to begin with...(IE their product and services are fine, but the client is just a perfectionist). This was however originally my responsibility, and therefore my fault.

That's what makes this a bit different. In hindsight, I learned now not to offer such things in the future, because apparently people cannot take it at face value, and want to exploit it beyond measure.

This... and add them to the junk rules. The End.

Well...after everything was said and done, or it SUPPOSED TO that way, yet they came today asking me to still write Ebooks for them. I am not even sure how on earth someone can correlate article writing to Ebooks?

And who the hell gets a random stranger to complete your college level dissertation, which was to be presented to other college students who had not previously seen the document in question?

I cannot imagine that this person will get very far in life at this rate. Only because of their "attitude" did I even opt to sit up all night analyzing and writing their dissertation to begin with.

I got "pwned".

I'm pretty sure when you issue a refund through PayPal they refund the total amount to the buyer, including the fees.

Also, are you sure this rant isn't just some sort of link bait to get more writing gigs? If it is, excellent work.

The issue was that it took 3 tries to refund the money. The initial refund didn't even register or go through. I refunded it again, and that refund also failed to be recognized or go through. Finally, I just decided to upload the money, and then send that off as a "payment owed", in which case the fees would be taken off from their end. So I refunded more, because of that.

No more writing gigs. Did you even read the rant? I was unable to deliver. Why would you want to hire such a person? Common sense would tell you to run in the other direction!

Here's a good lesson: learn from other people's mistakes, so that you don't have to make the same ones.

You should write for yourself, anyway. Start a blog that takes your readers inside the life of an empress living inside the Taj Mahal. Monetize with rupees for gold banners.

Clients that troublesome deserve to no longer be your clients. If you worked at McDonalds you'd be obligated to deal with whatever retards walk through the door, but not when you're self employed.

Go back and re-read it. thx
