Shark Tank is back!

I've been subscribed to AlphaM's stuff for like 15ish months. Dude is awesome at presenting but sometimes he rambles too much. Getting in with the PUA niche seems like the right fit for him.

BTW, he already has a membership site. I get an email about it like once a month.

Okay after watching Dragon's Den I'm gonna go with my theory that Kevin is having a midlife crisis and wants to be hip. He's trying to get in with the Ashley Madison owner on Shark Tank, and now he's investing in tattoo deodorant on Dragon's Den.

Also, I dunno what it is about Arlene in Dragon's Den, but if she was 20 years younger I'd be so into her.

Finally watched them while enjoying my teriyaki salmon stir fry. :)

Surfboard -- Awesome idea. Hope they do well, and I'm sure they will.

AlphaM -- I don't know, people like that just rub me the wrong way, and I'd never be interested in doing business with someone like that. He's a prime example of one of the many reasons I live in Asia vs. Canada. I don't have to fuck around with that fake "manscaping game" bullshit.

Ice Cream -- Ummm, on the fence. If they got the proper marketing force behind them, could be hugely profitable. Otherwise, will be a flop.

Cheater App -- Clever idea, too bad it wasn't his idea. That, and he's an idiot for going on national TV with it. Loads of people could have a similar app developed in 48 hours, and guaranteed many of them have better marketing skills / connections than that guy. Should have stayed under the radar, and quietly contacted people to help him market it. He's not going to see a penny from that thing now, because next week his $4.99 app will be heavily marketed with a new name for $0.99.

I liked the ice cream idea, but they definitely need to focus on high paying markets like Manhatten and LA to begin with. Shipping across the US can't be profitable. Just limit it to those 90% of rich people who either live in California or New York.

An idiot for going on TV? As opposed to doing what? He spent nearly $40k on the app and barely has any sales. Instead of taking a loss on it and shutting it down, he went out and hustled and partnered with a billionaire and instantly gained priceless connections.

Even if he didn't get a deal the free exposure of 6 million+ viewers and branding he got would have been worth it. There are already similar apps out there anyway. It's not a new or unique idea. IMO, like most people that appear on the show, he had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

That's what I was thinking too, or like Cuban said sooner or later everyone is going to copy it so why not let them do it legally by franchising it out into the top 100 markets? They already have the ecommerce site up and running so I don't think it would be hard to route orders based on zip code + radius. Then they get revenue on online orders + brick & morter orders and the brand they build through franchising could also be leveraged to more lucrative ventures such as selling it in grocery stores. If I was a shark I wouldn't invest in it because it's all too much work, but that ice cream company definitely have a few alternative paths it can take.

As for that cheating app, it wouldn't surprise me if ashleymaddison.com just rolls out their own version of this. I think he would have better luck if he rolled out something like vault hide:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netqin.ps&hl=en

It covers the cheating + privacy + business/industrial bases and would have universal appeal, especially to businesses that don't want to risk having sensitive info leaked when their employees/executives lose their phones.

I'm thinking O'leary's best bet would've been to

- Pay a programmer $5k to make his own version of the app for android/iPhone
- Co-brand it with Ashley Madison. Make it the official Ashley Madison cheating iPhone app.

The kid can't program, he contributes virtually nothing.

My thoughts exactly.

Anyone seen the 14 year old stock market genius on Dragon's Den?

Cant...stop...watching...this show. Still on Season 1, but it's freaking awesome. I don't know much about VC or startups, but it seems that the sharks are pretty formulaic in the way they choose to make their offers. They usually want 50%-51% of every company they're interested in. Something tells me that the entrepreneurs can do a little more homework and work out a better deal with a private firm.

That may be the case, but the sharks bring a lot of experience and connections to the table and are hands on with their investment. A lot of VC firms don't bring that sort of value.

In regards to the college kid turning down Mark Cuban, you guys are a bunch of dumbfucks. Here's why:

1. Kid already had a deal in place going into the show for his valuation. He doesn't need Cuban.
2. Cuban gave him a shitty deal. A patent on the bailment process valued at only $600k? GTFO.
3. Kid made $80k running this shit in 3 months. Easily scalable.
4. Mark Cuban's currently in talks trying to get in on the investment at a later stage of funding.

Essentially: kid's smart as fuck. Will still get Mark Cuban, but now at the price he wants. Don't be fucking dipshits and wet your pants every time someone "rich/famous" talks to you. That's almost as bad as when you used to buy hot girls drink just so you could talk to them...oh shit, you probably still do.

Agree, when the business is going well and it's only a question of money, it's much better to go to the bank or borrow the money, but when you aren't sure what step to take (e.g. licensing, franchising, expanding, etc...) and/or the business has stalled, that's when the sharks can really be useful and take it to the next level, even if you have to give up 50%.

Shark Tank is awesome tonight.

The Fuzzi Bunz story is quite interesting. A while back I was doing diaper adsense sites and was shocked at how high their CPC was as cloth diapers are a extremely compeditive niche. It's insane that she has already brought in 30m+ in only online sales.

The Rock Band stuff was cool too, however it was pretty plain the guy was not business savvy.

nice episode, I'm just gonna comment on the last pitch.

I think it's a great product. The market size is good, it's easy to sell, & the margins are great.

You could tell Daymond really wanted in on the product even before the offers came. He kept pointing / laughing at all the negatives of the product. It's like how people go buy a used car and point out all the blemishes in order to get a lower price.

I really dislike the glasses guy. Is it a pattern that they feature the most annoying people at the end? We had to deal with indian rape eyes last week. He shut down Kevin before he could finish his offer, goes on a rant about how he doesn't need the Sharks, & then ignores Robert's offer. Definitely not a guy I'd want to work with.

He did get a deal with Mark and I'm sure its going to do well after the episode.

p.s. I'm ordering some Lizzie cookies, I felt so bad at the end for them :-(

Damn nice!

I think I've mentioned it here a few times but I've always been interested in coming up with an algorithm that accurately predicts future trends based on a variety of metrics.

Once I perfect getting AI to understand English one of the next things I'll look into is getting AI to understand stocks. Although I no longer think purely technical trading is a viable way of doing it.

I introduced my wife to the Hamster Stare following the CATEapp pitch. The dude had mad looks, yo.
