Shopping For A New Mattress

It's time I got a new mattress as the one I have now is sinking in the middle and is starting to give me back aches when I get up in the morning.

Since I'm a side sleeper, I need something that isn't too firm and yet not too soft either.

I've owned a Tempurpedic before and thought it was alright but it got too hot during the summer months because the mattress didn't breathe good. The salesman at the store said they improved their design to eliminate the "night sweats" problem but I'm not sure I beleive him. Therefore, I may be leaning towards a tradional mattress, but high-quality.

Anyway, looking for recommendations (especially if you're a side-sleeper like me)
 


If you had issues with the Tempur's before I would stay away from them and look towards a higher end Eurotop Simmons or Serta based upon the info you've provided.

Waterbeds are still around. They just aren't popular anymore because they're unnecessary with the tech we can put into beds today. They're heavy, expensive, and require care. Next generation is gel.

@OP how long ago did you sleep on a tempur? The first generation sucked hugely. Way too hot. I actually sleep on a tempur cloud supreme and it's really not too bad (I'm a warm sleeper too). I find it extremely comfortable, but everyone's comfort is different (otherwise there would only be one type of mattress to buy, right?)

If you're totally against tempur, mx=headroom nailed it. Go with an individually pocketed coil mattress. They work well for side sleepers because they let you sink in where you need to (hips, shoulders). Simmons is known for their individually pocketed coil.

KEEP IN MIND: Simmons also uses memory foam for the top layer of foam on several of their mattresses. If you think tempur is hot, a Simmons with the memory foam on top will be no different. Try to find one with latex on the top. It tends to be the coolest foam and it conforms similarly to memory foam.
 
I used to sell mattresses for a living and removed the old ones from peoples houses too (most of them turn to shit after a few years). There is only one "great" mattress and that is Stearns and Foster. You spend 30% of your life in bed, do yourself a favor and get a Stearns and Foster. Nothing can compare. It is the Bentley of beds and you can pick up a decent one for $2k - do it. They also have a 20 year warranty, no questions asked so it will be the last bed you buy. Everything else is a DISTANT second to Stearns.

I should have expounded on that. You buy the bed and in 18 years or so you tell them its starting to dip in the middle and they give you a new one with a new 20 year warranty. Rinse repeat till you're dead.
 
I love my Sealy I am a side sleeper and its really comfortable. No sags and it feels the same as the day I bought it 3 years ago. The Sealy I had before, which the X still has is well over 10 years old and was still great the last time I was in it.

Most new mattress's have a 30 night guarantee, so dont be afraid to test it out. No matter what you do do not cheap out.

The three things you need to spend as much money as possible on. Maybe even spend more than you can afford.

1 Mattress
2 Sheets
3 Shoes

If you cheap on on your mattress it will lead to a miserable life.

Try a 100% latex mattress. We bought a king 2 years ago and it has been the best mattress I have ever owned. It's not "hot" like memory foam and also retains some "springiness" unlike the memory foam beds.

Also, be careful of home much stock you put into the warranty of any coil mattress. When I was doing my research, most of the major mattress companies would only consider taking a warranty claim if there was more than 2" depression or sway in the mattress. To me that was a hell of a lot!

Memory foam is probably out. You ever try to have sex on one of those things?

Let's just say, it's not fun.
 
Englander Viscopedic, best mattress ive ever owned. The top couple inches are memory foam on a regular mattress.
 
I like the Beautyrest mattresses. I've owned a few of them over the last decade.

My wife is a side sleeper but I'm more of a stomach sleeper so we went with a "split" mattress with two different firmness levels... one of the best innovations ever!

I'm about to buy two mattress sets for our new home. One king set and one queen set. So.... I'm very interested in others opinions here.
