I received a prescription for SINGULAIR 10mg tablets last week for seasonal allergies as the antihistamines I had weren't helping the problem (pollen from olive trees here in Spain). It's like this every year at this time for about a month, and I get the worst hay fever like symptoms.

This stuff is made by Merck and they wrote some 30 million prescriptions for it last year in the US alone as it is primarily used to control asthma. That's about 3 billion dollars worth as it sells for $100 a box (28 pills, 28 days worth).

Anyways, almost immediately after taking the first pill I started experiencing nasty side effects that got worse each day; cramping in my feet, legs, hands, arms, upper torso, abdominal bloating and pain in my stomach, and the worst nightmares. Further reading seems to indicate this isn't unusual along with loads of other side effects including behavioral problems, depression and even suicidal thoughts (including at least one documented suicide). There's also an incurable disease called Churg-Strauss syndrome that may be linked to taking this medication.

There are almost 2500 documented cases of side effects listed here...

and more elsewhere.

I've stopped taking this medication as I am convinced that it is not safe and would not recommend it to anyone else, even if it cleared up my allergies while I was taking it.

If a doctor writes a prescription for SINGULAIR for you or one of your family I would be very wary and watch for any indication that it is doing something other than what it is supposed to.

The FDA cleared Singulair on the suicide claims like a year ago.

I had it prescribed for asthma and never had any issue with it. I only took it for a couple weeks though because it wasn't doing anything for me.

Yeah, and the FDA has never been wrong about anything before. This is right off the Merck site...

"Less common side effects that have happened with SINGULAIR include:
• increased bleeding tendency
• allergic reactions [including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat (which may cause
trouble breathing or swallowing), hives and itching]
• behavior and mood related changes [agitation including aggressive behavior, bad/vivid dreams,
depression, feeling anxious, hallucinations (seeing things that are not there), irritability,
restlessness, suicidal thoughts and actions (including suicide), tremor, trouble sleeping]
• drowsiness, pins and needles/numbness, seizures (convulsions or fits)
• palpitations
• nose bleed
• diarrhea, indigestion, inflammation of the pancreas, nausea, vomiting
• hepatitis
• bruising
• joint pain, muscle aches and muscle cramps
• swelling"

Now, don't get me wrong, they prescribed it 30 million times last year and the instance of these side effects is small, so the risk factor is too. I would just be careful. It certainly didn't agree with me.

Here you go:

Score some MSM here (not an affiliate link) and do about a teaspoon in some juice morning and evening.

I gave some to a friend here who gets almost immobile this time of year with breathing problems. He had a marked improvement after about 3 -4 days and has been doing well all month. He's quite happy.

It helps your body to not react so harshly to allergens. My wife has done well with it, too.

Of course, in Spain, you may need to find some locally.

Good luck,

Eric

I take it...i think zyrtec is just as good though...although i tend to get MORE asthma attacks when taking zyrtec than taking nothing...

Don't really think singular is that great...i just take it cause i got a prescription and it's 5 dollars a bottle of 60...

Thanks bud, I'll look into it. Someone here said taking a tablespoon of local honey every day is supposed to help too. Never heard such a thing before.

Alexb, this is what I have to contend with, certainly beautiful I think but every where you can put an olive tree the Spaniards have to the north of me and when the wind blows from inland it is debilitating...

Been on singulair for a couple of years now. It keeps my asthma in check, and, as a side effect, also controls my upper respiratory symptoms.

I don't have allergic rhinitis -- I have the same symptoms, but not due to the histamine reaction -- the allergist says I'm 'hyper-sensitive to environmental irritants' -- whatever that means.

I have read, however, that the negative reactions are more common in children - especially the behavioral ones. That's why I don't want my daughter to take it.

Never used Singulair, but I have pretty bad allergies during this season and I find claritin works fucking magic. Its also ridiculously safe, has basically no side effects. Awesome drug imo.

Yeah, I picked up a box of claritin from the farmacia this afternoon. I was taking cetirizine hydrocloride in double doses before the singulair and it wasn't doing shit.

eat more onions and hot peppers, spicy food will help.
also, get a neti pot and irrigate your nasal passages 2-3x a day.
