Site Rank on Alexa down to 41,000 US rankings.

NYdailyNews, HuffingtonPost, Few other major blogs linked to site

I've moved from like 150k down to 41k in less than 45 days.

Tremendous work ethic though.

I'm wondering. How hard will it be to get my site down to 20k / 10k mark on Alexa for US rankings?

If a site is down to these numbers, any one have an idea of what they become valued at?

I have 2 or 3 sites I own right now I can do this to but it's getting complex needing staff, etc.

However, I'm just wondering.. what's it take now to get a $100k content site? What's it take to get $1 million out of a content site?

I have no problem admitting I'm not educated on current markets, been too busy working at this whole vision for the last 2 years. I sold a site back in 2008 for a nice sum but I know it's not just raining money anymore and people with bigger money prefer acquiring a project with all pieces in tact... etc... where as back then, people were buying and putting their own plans together.

All ideas appreciated. All sarcasm laughs welcome. Hopefully more help than comedians though.

alexa rankings are easily faked nowadays... so I wouldn't look at it. Just look at the traffic you are receiving. question about the 100k site, I would like to know as well :-)

op, what will you be doing if google messes with your site or you believe it's not gonna happen for sure?

Who cares about Alexa rank? It's a nice vanity metric but that's about it.

I used to care about it a lot before realizing that a site I have that is ranked under 10,000 is making the same as a site I have that is over 100,000.

The websites traffic is at 215k impressions per month and rising...

It's been revamped less than 60 day ago. From HTML to Wordpress. Slow updates (then) to hourly updates (now).

Its a google news approved site. I'd love to be a small HuffingtonPost.

It was doing 50k impressions a month before that, as I wasn't updating daily.

Trying to get to 500k impressions a month now.

I really wasn't focused on earnings until now as my first goal, simply get traffic to 250k imp per month

Impressions is another useless statistic. How much M-O-N-E-Y are you making? I've had credit sites with CPMs of ~$1,000+ and I've had celebrity sites with CPMs of $0.2, it's cool to say you have sites that get hundreds of thousands of visits every day - but you know what's cooler? Making fucking money.

Stop paying attention to useless shit and start paying attention to the bottom line.

Harsh, but fair.

My goal is to attract buyers in long run.

This will help more than hurt. Alexa still does have validity in the world.

I've seen some fake sites with low US visitor %, stuff's hilarious. English site with 60% of traffic from India

But I def aaree on making money. My first goal is to get my traffic & rank up though. Twitter started without having a single dime off ads............... i'm more leaning towards there approach than just making $3000 a month. This site's pretty powerful and with the revamp I'm hoping to turn it into a news powerhouse I can sell off for 6 to 7 figures... a major lump sum up front + monthly payments over a 2 year period.

Could be wrong but i think your approach is more turn and burn.

LOL... if you plan to sell a site for a good amount you should at least know what #s to pay attention to. Sorry, it's not impressions.

interesting.

considering facebook, twitter, google.. all started with no ads.

What do you think is most important number? I'd love to know your opinion to have food for thought.

Ad revenue is not everything to me b/c of experiences. I've had an associate pick-up a site for $1 million cash that was losing money monthly b/c the traffic was so high. A tattoo site at that but it was in like 2009 or 2010.

I think traffic and the ease of transferring a business is most important with a GREAT idea. When you're following a set formula vs creating a good idea, you're likely selling a site for less than $100k in my few experiences.

I want to improve factors of site but my first goal is keep people interested, trap traffic. I would think that's most relevant.

I want to sell the project off to create a large cushion funding or create a system I can manage with little work (who doesnt?)

As a fellow Google News site owner, this thread is pertinent to my interests. Mine is a bit of a side project - traffic is only about 1/10th of your current numbers - but it similarly has received links and citations from big brands at one point (or another).

FWIW, I realized Alexa numbers were statistically worthless as shit when I spotted that a page on one of my low traffic websites - of interest to article writers in India, I strongly assume, and who would have the Alexa bar installed - was responsible for it ranking better than the local (national legacy) city newspaper's site.

But unfortunately some people in the biz, including potential buyers, may still give weight to Alexa numbers. So maybe you should start posting news stories of interest to Indian article writers. ;)

Best of luck.

I wouldn't 'target' any particular group to boost my alexa rankings.

GNA is part of the formula but not everything my friend.

I definitely understand now why people were paying $10k for quality, non-updated GNA sites though.

If you have skype, DM it to me. Trading tips might be cool.

> I wouldn't 'target' any particular group to boost my alexa rankings.

Ha. Hence the "winkie". I would never suggest someone create a Bollywood section on their site simply for the Alexa boost. lol

> GNA is part of the formula but not everything my friend.

No doubt. In part, your site must have featured some quality content to be getting the MSM links you mentioned. Even though GN indexed sites are vetted before inclusion, there are still some websites producing junk in there that would never get a link from a legit site.

>I definitely understand now why people were paying $10k for quality, non-updated GNA sites though.<

Yup. The instant indexing in both results sections, with a good chance to appear on or even at the top of page one, is/was worth the price to some. Even if their plans to use it eventually ran them into the ground and out of GN.

> If you have skype, DM it to me. Trading tips might be cool.

Agreed. I belonged to a couple of paid forums for owners of smaller news sites a while back, but they dried up or simply became useless. T'would be nice to banter with someone who's grinding away in the same field.

I'm actually not on skype... but now I'll be getting on there asap and send you a PM. :)

Cheers.

I didn't mention anything about ads.

I simply stated you need to pay attention to other #s regarding your site stats than impressions.

Unique Visitors / Day

Page views Per-Unique User

Page views per-unique user by traffic source

Bounce Rates for pages/categories/sections and by traffic source

Revenue per-user when you start running ads, affiliate links, etc...
Revenue per-user based on where the user came from

Which articles or categories are most popular on your site.

Your audience demo

Other than "are you making money" don't focus on 1 thing to measure a site, start viewing your site as-if it were alive, and always changing. You need to keep up with your audience, and the #s based on them and your site.

That was just a quick run-down I`m sure there's more :)

thanks Todd. I will definitely begin looking at some of these I have not

I definitely view the Bounce Rates and uniques daily. I also do check out articles to see what's top content but no categories. I'll have a look
