Slow computer, suggestions?

I just enabled ACHI and the Trim command.

All that mumbo jumbo registry editing stuff you posted from ASUS shouldn't be necessary. Trim gets turned on automatically in Windows when you plug a SSD in and AHCI is turned on in the bios and registry edits are unnecessary for it to work. Like Midas, I too use the software RAID, or mirrored disk as Windows calls it. You set this up in Computer Management > Disk Management.

Another thing you can try with 16gb+ of RAM is turning off your paging file. I haven't run a paging file for more than a year now. It's not necessary as long as you've got the memory.

Like most, I usually leave my machine on 24 / 7. Well, after a year of this, it's gotten pretty damn slow. Even after clearing all the temp files with CCleaner, cleaning the registry, running virus scans, malware scans, etc.

Running SmartDefrag to keep the HDD defragged.
Kaspersky AV
CCleaner for periodic cleaning of temp files.

It's just annoyingly slow.

Like 1996 Prodigy slow.

Worst case, I'm thinking of just getting a new HDD. 1TB solid state drive to replace this one. I've already got all the files I need backed up, so that's not a problem.

Rather not build a new machine. This one *should* still be fast enough for what I do everyday. 12 gig memory, AMD Thuban hex core, Evga 1gb gpu.

Suggestions? Ideas?

Didn't read any of the replies, but I had been dealing with a similar issue. Like you, I ran CCleaner and cleaned out everything, defragged, etc. Obviously this didn't help much. I finally figured out that a few things inside my comp were running a lot hotter than they were supposed to.

One of the fans had stopped working and the fan on my heatsink was running pretty slow. Cleaned everything out, re-lubed the fans, and temps dropped all around while the operating speed went back up. Got some thermal paste coming to redo all that as well. I still need new fans, but I expect the thermal paste will drop it closer to near-new temp levels. Everything runs pretty smoothly now, though.

So, you may want to try downloading Speccy - System Information - Free Download and checking all your temps before formatting everything.

Update: on days that I shut down at night, I would get up the following morning, swing by the computer, hit the power button, go get coffee, come back, login, go back to the kitchen for 10 mins or so while all the programs loaded, come back to my desk, sit and wait for things to complete loading / starting, then finally start my day.

NOW: Turn on computer, system is up, programs loaded / started, and I'm at in about 45 seconds.

Also, loading stuff like PSDs takes just a few seconds now. Even multiple PSDs at one time.

BEST.MONEY.EVER.SPENT. (on a piece of hardware)

PS. you can use Goodsync to sync to Amazon S3 (for whomever asked that previously).

this is my exact daily routine, same lags, everything. my morning pattern is so ingrained that if did that upgrade, my computer would be ready to roll 9m 15s before i am.

Yep. I too used to wait close to 10 minutes for everything to start up. Now it's less than a minute. Photoshop used to take more than a minute to open. Now it takes less than 10 seconds.

All those minutes add up to a lot of time wasted just sitting there waiting for shit to open.
