I remember when I made the mistake of taking a job as an SEO for a big SEM/SEO firm here in NYC about 2-3 years ago. I was in a semi-slump, had just sold my adult company and wasn't really sure what I was going to do. I figured I'd do some consulting, but finding clients was a pain in the ass, so I landed the SEO job. The whole thing lasted for about a week. I sat there at my desk wondering "why the hell am I going to bust my ass and work for the man for $60k a year, when I can easily do that in a month working at home?". Needless to say I quit after a week, and had a rude awakening that I was destined to work for myself, which is what I do now and will forever do. I was also lucky enough because of the adult sale I technically didn't need a job, but I wanted to see if I could do it, which I couldn't.
When taking a job as an SEO you are the cream of the crop, or at least your bosses will treat you like that, and you may start getting an ego because of it. You are hired to work magic on other people's sites in a realm that not many people outside of this fine industry know of. David Blaine may be able to freeze himself for a week, but he can't SEO a site to the top of Google if his life counted on it. So if it comes down to your thoughts and gut and you hear a little voice inside saying "why are you doing this?", don't quit right away, use it as a motivation tool to get your side shit setup first THEN quit and work for the best boss in the world, yourself.

awsome post jon thanks a lot. Im pretty new to internet marketing, about a year but i got into to be my own boss. This job is just gunna be part time so i will have plenty of time to keep up with my own shit. I am hurting a little for money so thats one reason but the other is i figure its a good way to get super familiar with seo and then use that for myself when im done with there site since its only temp for a few months unless it works out super good, eather way id be done with it in a few months anyways but it would be good to have the option. Anyways thanks again jon for the post and the forum.
I never understood why someone would work for a company doing seo, being an affiliate manager, ect, ect.

There are some key advantages to being a corporate whore for a while:
- Meet new people and make contacts that you can hit up even after you leave if you play it right
- If there are hotties and you don't plan on staying long the macking ops are unlimited
- You will work on projects you never would on your own... widening your scope and forcing you to become more versatile
