Soccer Know Your Roll

I grew up playing soccer and love the game but I can't stand the faggotry and theatrics that seem to have become more and more common in the last decade or so. It is a great sport when played well and, if you actually understand the game and level of technical skill it requires, it is fascinating to watch. But the way it is played by today's professionals is just embarrassing. Maybe this is something that is more common outside of the US but when I played you almost never encountered players who would play the game in such a dis-honorably ghey fashion. Sorry for that rant but seeing that video made me laugh but has gotten me really pissed off at the same time.

Oh and who the fuck is this Jim Rome guy? Like the Glenn Beck of sports?

If you don't like football, don't fucking cover it.

Does he rant about curling and boule too?

And don't forget, in the NFL stopping a team on 3rd an 1 on the 50 yard line and making them punt is HUGE. That's as big as a touch down.

86,000 people attended the pats/bucs game at wembley a few weeks ago.

Wrong. A score of 14 is 4 scores. Two of them are almost a given but not guaranteed in the slightest and there's more than one way to score on the extra point. Two touchdowns could result in either a score of 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16, depending on if the extra points are made and how they are executed.

Even if you don't count the extra points as scores, it is very rare to see an american football game with less than four scores(either touchdowns or field goals). Because there's more than one way to score, if you can't make it all the way down to the end zone for 6, you can kick a field goal for 3. Even the shittiest teams can usually make two field goals during the course of a game.(unless you're the browns who are apparently shittier than the shittiest)

You do know that there was already a NFL Europe from 1991 to 2007 right? :eek7:

It seemed to be more popular in Germany than the UK.

The UK had 2 teams during those years. The London Monarchs played from 1991-1998 and the Scottish Claymores from 1995-2004.

NFL Europe was losing $30 Million per year when they shut it down in 2007. There was 6 teams left at the time, 5 in Germany and 1 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Most of the players were young American NFL players playing through the U.S. off season.

NFL Europe was like the equivlent to minor league baseball. I'm talking about creating a brand new franchise that expands the current NFL.

also the corruption and huge debt those club accumulated. I can't believe they don't use instant replay...there is no "professional" in that sport

and in US, we do it hardcore

I find a majority of sports to be boring. The only sport that I will watch (if nothing else is on) is hockey, and I enjoy going to the games too. While I do agree that soccer has some of the most passionate fans and truly deserves the name Football, I find it amusing that there are theatrics like this:

It's not a mans sport unless you can stomp on another players head without breaking the rules

Just coached my daughter's soccer team to another title, soccer is a great game.

For little girls.

Those of you hating on football have never had the pleasure of hitting a guy so hard snot flies out of his nose and his eyes roll back in his head. And he knows you're gonna try and do it again next play.

Soccer, soccer, soccer (football)...let's see...

a) Low scoring.
b) Gigantic field.
c) Too much booting the ball as far away from you as possible, chase it, other team just boots it/headbutts it back in the other direction.
d) Shootouts are hilarious. It's a fucking guessing game.
e) Take as many falls as possible to draw yellow/red cards.
f) The only way you can take someone out is by tripping them.

American football...

a) Different concise plays are run at specific times for specific strategies.
b) Combination of running AND throwing AND kicking the ball (egg).
c) Tackling.
d) Each play builds up a level of excitement. There's excitement a few times per game in soccer when somebody finally gets a shot on goal.
e) No senselessness of just booting the ball as far as possible from the opponent's scoring zone. You can't throw a bomb in football every time like you can bomb a soccer ball 100x a game.

I don't know how you can say soccer is a better sport. Soccer has many more fans because it's much more global. It's an easier sport. Anybody when they're a kid can put a ball on the ground and kick it around/enjoy it. Maybe you like soccer more, but it's not a better sport.

American football takes more strength, skill, and smarts. Not to say that soccer doesn't have it's talented players that can do amazing things with the ball. Football does too though. And it's much more exciting.

I guess I'm just a meathead.

Jim Rome is the voice of a popular sports radio program called "The Jim Rome Show". It's built on the platform of talking junk. He also hosts a TV show on ESPN call "Jim Rome is Burning" which is sort of the same thing but only a half and hour vs 3 hours for radio.

Getting into the radio show I will tell you has a learning curve (what is lettuce, clones, the jungle, clone on clone crime, a take, a vine, that kind of stuff) but it's a pretty good show. You can subscribe to it online at jimrome.com.

You've obviously never played. That's a huge generalization that I could apply to American football, but I don't care to waste any more time than what I already have on this thread.

Yeah I played for a couple years and I've been to about 30 soccer games in the past 3 years (forced). Sitting through them was agony.

MLS in the United States/Canada is expanding to 16 teams in 2010, 18 teams in 2011, and 20 teams in 2012. Every new MLS franchise is required to have plans for a soccer specific stadium for the team. Philadelphia, Portland, and Vancouver are the 3 newest franchises that have been announced.

The Seattle Sounders FC had an average attendance of over 30,000 per game in 2009.

Again, I love American Football, but calling it a man's sport because you hit people is stupid... YOU WEAR FUCKING PADS AND HELMETS!!!

Play Rugby at least.
