Spread Your Seed

If you don't keep the process simple, the process will surely die.

Every piece of your virality puzzle needs to be so simple the flea on the monkey should be able to do it. If you fuck this up, game over. If a virus had to reinvent itself every host, we would probably have no viruses. If the incentive is not immediate gratification, you have roadblocked yourself. If your communication is not direct and easy, you just drove your virus right off the road.

Keep it simple, stupid.

Simple Incentive: If you can't get someone to give you their e-mail, do a click to tweet, share a facebook, up your reddit, etc in less than 30 seconds to a minute, it better be because they can't take their eye off your page/video, or they better be walking to their kitchen to grab their wallet. Keep the incentive so easy, so valuable.

Use words like "JUST". Just implies it's just so easy anyone can just do it. I don't know any big companies who say to "JUST" do something, but I'm sure they'd be big if they just did it.

Communication: Don't over communicate. Just turn here. Just click here. Just send this to x, and click on y. Just check this out real quick.

A key to communication and simplicity is to take argument off the table before it starts. Don't give any outs. Make the communication quick and mandatory. If they think they have options, they might stop and think. "You might be hungry, but trust me, the next exit is the big one. Keep going."

Simplicity: Keep it simple, stupid.

Pathway

Watch football this weekend? Did you see the game where the receivers were running around like banshees just all over the place? Me neither. They were running routes. A few even ran extremely precise routes, were targeted, and converted a pass.

Where the hell do you keep sending your prospects? If you’re not directing them, they’re going off the radar.

The contagion needs a pathway to and from. There and back. But they can’t just go and come back. They need to do something. They need to multiply, act parasitic, and flee from the old host and get to the new. Fast.

Virality is easy. Anyone can go and get a lucky tweet, a reddit link to pop, or come up with a clever quote which a few people share on facebook. Those are all mini virals. Someone enjoyed it, shared it, but then… then what? What’s in it for you? What did YOU gain?

Shit goes viral all the time, but the path a person goes on better damn well give you something in return, and it better give them a way back to you.
This video has gone viral this week:

Ylvis - The Fox [Official music video HD] - YouTube

I have watched it quite a few times. 1.) it’s funny and insane and creative. 2.) it’s going viral and you should probably study the elements why. Maybe it’s because of the funny, insane, creativeness. Or maybe it’s something else.

But the most key thing to the pathway is connection. You need the pathway to connect and connect and connect and connect. A receiver has the route option at the top of his route to take off, stop and come back, flag, etc. If the quarterback has to flee the pocket but still wants to convert, the receiver better be able to find the next gap to convert a pass. You better have multiple ways to capture your audience, and get something from them.

What did I ultimately take away from that video? I found this gem.
