Standing Desks

Standing all day isn't any better than sitting all day.

Not true.

When you stand - you always micro-move. Also, when you need to do something (like walk to the fridge or walkaround and think) you just START MOVING, you don't have to get up.

I've been using a standing desk for 2 years and in the 1st month I lost 5 kilos without any exercise. My back does not hurt anymore.

I could have missed it in the video, but how does he make it automatic?

I'm ok with the rounded corners so I'll go for the original top.

What do you mean by automatic?

It's got the up/down control on the side, if that's what you mean.

Can't get these in Thailand at the moment, kind of disappointed about that.

Oh well.

Yeah, i meant is the up and down control. Does it come as standard with the desk? I don't see it on the IKEA product page. If its an add on, I wonder where he bought it and how he fitted it.

Nice! It'll be on my list of things to get for after I move property.

Yer it looks like a decent system and for $500 the price is right.

I've tossing up between getting one of those really good office chairs with proper back support or one of these.

I'm leaning towards this mainly because standing doesn't fuck my back up nearly as much as sitting does.

$500 is cheap. Its £465 i.e. $715 over here. I'll still buy it though.

The stand up chair in the video looks good. I want to get one of those good back support office chairs too for when I sit down.

Wow that mark up is crazy, I would hate to know how much it costs in Oz, probably $2k, eh.

By the way I once made a standing desk out of this:

$39 bucks + a drill + a couple of screws.

I have a GeekDesk Max, large beach veneer. I've had it for like, 3-4 years I think. Still works good. Presets are nice. The top is starting to show signs of wear.

The Most Affordable "Automatic" Standing Desk – Stand Desk, Inc is one at a good rate with lots of options. i dont want to stand while i work so can't input much as far as how good they are etc.

Thanks for the StandDesk recommendation. It looks promising.

Ikea's search seems to be full of fail, here's are direct link to the complete system.

BEKANT Desk sit/stand - black-brown/black - IKEA

Thanks for posting this acidie. I have bad memories of IKEA stuff, but it's been 20 years. Maybe they've improved on the quality end.

I was also considering Ikea and saving a ton o money. They usually make quality products from what I've seen - considering price. But in the end i wanted something that seemed super sturdy and I could lean on, etc. But you can prob lean on the Ikea desk if you put it up against a wall.

I prefer to switch between standing and sitting through the day, and I spent about $20 building a small platform type thing to sit on top of my desk for when I want to stand and work. It's just a 1x12 and some 2x6 blocks from Lowes with a crappy paint job that only somewhat matches my desk. I might take a picture if I can find my phone. I need to brag about my Craigslist desk anyway.

Okay sorry for the double post, but I'm slow at editing. This desk is probably too big for the room, but I got it on CL for $20 so wassup. It retails in lower four figures so wtf. I bought it from some people who had their house foreclosed on, so who knows. Beware of my redneck tendencies showing.

Okay so this is how I normally work sitting down. My laptop is up on this black thing that goes across sitting on my desk so that it's lifted a little so I can use my wireless keyboard and mouse comfortably. It also lifts the screen up to eye level so it doesn't just destroy my neck. The thing the laptop is sitting on isn't attached to the desk, but it can only slide forward because it's the exact length of the inside of the hutch.

I keep this little thing in storage up above in the cabinet. It's made of the same shit as the piece my laptop is sitting on in the first picture, except it's shorter and has little feet.

This is a better picture of the thing and the little feet. You can also see the shitty spray paint job I did on it.

So the little thing stands on the bigger thing, and I slide the bigger thing out towards the front of the desk a bit. It's still stuck between the sides of the hutch, so it can't slide off sideways. I use the keyboard that's actually a part of my laptop when I'm standing, and I have my mouse to the side like this.

I've never been overly impressed with the quality from Ikea.

The way I view anything from Ikea is, it's cheaper then alternatives but I don't expect to last as long.

If it lasts a year or two then it's doing alright.
