Is anybody using the VBulletin publishing suite which has forums, but also blogs and a cms? I have tried integrating WP with other forums - but it never really works out prefectly.

My finger is just about on the purchse button, but I'd love feedback, opinions, other suggestions....

You should go do some reading on their forum before buying if you have not already. Many people are unhappy with vBulletin since Internet Brands took over the company and VB4 came out. 3 long time developers including the lead developer Kier Darby left the company last year. There seems to be a large number of people jumping ship for IP.Board.

Thanks.

I heard some people were not happy with V4. I don't mind spending some money, but I don't want to spend money AND bang my head against the wall getting it to work.

I appreciate the suggestions.

Internet Brands has been a disaster since they bought vB.

IPB doesn't impress me either.

Unless you want to run a forum with private sections (like WF) or specialized features, I have no idea why anyone would go to the trouble of trying to start a community when the meta communities like Facebook have features that make it easier, cheaper and scalable.

Guerilla - +rep type point too.

Back in the day, I moderated a Yahoo Group around a niche I worked in - and was a moderate success.

It fell off, but I was thinking that a Facebook Group might be similar.

Spam, spam, spam, spam registrations.

Neverending.
In the end, that's what killed the Yahoo group sort of. And the other issue - is driving members to facebook real estate, and not my own.

So - does anybody have a system they like for buiding a community???

I have a pretty popular website/blog. It has actual comments, and of course I moderate to eliminate the mountains of silly SPAM some of you guys send. ...And some members send me articles.

So I think I am ready to take this to the next level. I am ready to take advantage of more user generated content.

A forum for sure - maybe a very simple blogging system for members. Most of them don't even want author ids for WP. They just email me the posts to add myself under their user names. Besides that cuts down on SPAM.

It sucks, really it does. If you want to add a vbulletin forum, try and go with version 3.8. I regret buying that piece of shit 4.0.

Sorry about that. But thanks, that was I was lookig for.

I was also hoping for, "I love product xyz!" from a member sho has been around.

Actually the free word press plugin - simplepress - works well with the right theme - so I may just go back to that. I was ready to pay for a few more functions though.

I have paid for scripts before that only worked in firefox because the geeks only tested in firefox. Agh, most of my users are over 40 and they use IE. Not too much is mre frustrating than spending money and time getting a system installed, and the getting users emailing you all frustrated because they cannot register after you spent money/time to attract them!

I have to agree with BeerHat if you go the VBulletin route definitely go 3.8. I ran 4 for a couple of weeks but it was so buggy that I paid to have it downgraded.

I also tried SimplePress, it was actually pretty good but it always felt like something was missing (which might be because most boards I visit are VBulletin). Other than the non-automatic upgrades can't really say anything bad about it if your running a small board.

There is a solution. It's not ideal, but it is a compromise between the social features of Facebook and privately run software.

Ning.

I have been a vBulletin customer for several years now. Since then, I've separated my site - it's content & thus its content management system - away from its community platform, which is vBulletin's forum software.

As another user mentioned, vB has fallen apart since Kier left.

As far as forum software goes, vB, IPB, SMF, and phpBB have all fallen apart due to the fact that they're so ancient, and the web has increased a great deal since the beginning of each of those respective software packages.

Right - I hate to keep up my whining fest - but I've installed and then deleted just about all of these because of issues. I haven't tried IPB yet.

I may just give up and use simplepress - NOT because it's free, and NOT because it does everything I want - but just because it works(at least it works if the theme you use doesn't mess it up like one of my favorite paid themes does), and because support is active.

And as another user suggested, I may need another solution to make an easy way for trusted users to submit content. Maybe there is a WP plugin with a friendlier editor or something like that.
