i use phpbb, i had to add alot of mods to stop the spam, but i havent had any automated spam in 2 years

What about for a first timer with a low budget. Do you think phpbb will do the trick or will I get fucked with spam?

If there's a budget at all, vBulletin by far. Ive worked with them both, skinning, and maintaining, and as far as integrating it with your site, reliability, coding, plugins, and theme wise, I'd go with vBulletin.

I think there is another free forum, although I haven't tried it, but C2M has it installed on his forum, and Ruck said it works great. Deffinate option for those who don't want to fork out that $180 bucks!

Oh Wolf, by the way.. WFReview kicks ass! Nicely done bud, top notch programming.

Vbulletin is more flexible compared to phpBB. I would suggest the former. Btw, those chicks are all delectable. Lol!

I have to say that PHPbb 3 is a HUGE fucking improvement and I do use it on quite a few sites. But for any site that I am serious about, I'd use vBulletin (aff link). There was a time when I had 24 vB licenses and it is worth every cent they charge for it.

BTW I think now they have Askimnet (or however you spell that Auttomatic solution) integration both for the forum and the blog plugin.

If you want state of the art security features and regular updates then I would definitly go for vbulletin. But VB cost close to 200 for a full license. Phpbb is free. but does not have the support and updates that VB has it's a trade off.

I really like vBulletin, I still get some spam. Worth $180 for sure.
Make sure you have ImageMagick installed on the server, and change the default CAPTCHA settings in the backend (under options/images iirc)

That will keep the bots out. Anyone who spams by hand will be able to register whatever you do. But bots are really annoying.
