What are the pros and cons of abandoning television?

It would add years to your life just getting rid of the TV and watching the programs you really want online.

You save time because of the lack of advertisements, and you can download the shows you want while you work -- thus giving you something (a milestone to look forward to).

I rarely watch more than an hour a day just because I now only watch what I enjoy, rather than the useless, repetitive bs a boob-tube offers.

Think about how much time you waste watching a program that you don't like, just because you know something you want to see is going to be on soon.

I often use a 20 or 40 minute show as specific milestones throughout my work day to break up the monotony and give my brain a break.

Ditch the tube bros!

It depends. Are you generally wasting a few hours a day on movies/series/games/whatever? If yes, then TV is not that much of a different time waster.

Personally I don't have it in my apartment not because I'd have any special kind of dislike but because I simply don't have a need for it.

Any kind of video entertainment I want the internet can provide me with.

Don't miss it at all. We read and talk to each other.

Read and talk to each other?

Only time I watch TV is when I have my dinner or lunch sometimes.. But I don't want to scramble when I want to watch something urgent, which have never happened. I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon though

Finally.

Talked the wife into my point of view (after taking many perspectives in and out of WF).

The compromise was that we'll get rid of cable (which will save a moderate amount of money for us each month) but keep the actual television to use for Netflix from the XBox, which I can get behind.

Boom, thanks WF.

kids will thank you

Joking a bit, we do own a TV here but not hooked up to antenn, use it for the occasional downloaded movie..

I don't watch TV for more than 5 years. The only thing that gets in the way is this:
Someone: Hey do you know that commercial where this guy..
Me: No, I don't.
Someone: Oh come on, it's hillarious.
Me: I don't watch TV.
Someone: Anyway, so this guy...

Most of the times it's a shitty commercial and I wonder why the fuck am I still talking to this guy.

I use cable mostly for the news. I don't see how I can get all the live news from the internet...

cnn, msnbc, fox, cnbc + 3-4 local news channels all live and I can instantly switch between them with a remote. That is worth $50/month imo. I occasionally watch other stuff. I usually have the news on the TV while I'm working.

I could live without it, but I like it.

Would this allow me to own the values of my family just a little more?

Probably

Is it too extreme?

Slightly imo if this is the only reason you are doing it. But to each his own.

Can we just solve any value-related issues by moderating television intake?

No. There is a whole world out there that influences people everyday. You have to teach kids (or whoever you are referring to) to think for themselves. You should be able to influence and shape their values/morals since you are an authority figure, but you shouldn't force it on them imo. If they can think for themselves then they can filter out what influences them and what is important or right or wrong.

Are you ok with your kids being shaped from a young age by corporations that exist to profit by turning kids into faithful consumerist sheeple?
