I think you can tell by the post who is a true "noob" and who isnt. The "noobs" are flamed and the "real" post are not.

#1 turn off sigs

#2 no new threads

#3 min number of days before being able to anything, ie reply to a thread

have a min # of posts/days for this stuff to get turned on

look for some fancy vbulletin plugins that apply certain rules to new accounts
ie you gotta search before each thread or something.. etc

but, before any of this goes into affect, most definitely install a more private section of the board for the non noobs (thats the purpose, to keep them out right?)

It's all about what you don't want noobs to do.

1- Posting pointless threads.
2- Pointless replies.
3- Signature advertising for spammers and ebook freaks.

How to partially solve these problems:
1- A period of time must be spent as *active members* = can make new threads. [a couple of weeks?].
2- Stupid replies are strictly -rep'ed.
3- Sigs turned off until a number of +reps are added or when they are able to post new threads.

That way you can weed out spammers, grant access for new experienced members, and give noobs the time to use the search feature. That's not a complete solution, but it could lead to one.

Edit: Just realized nachoninja's points are almost the same. Sorry? :)

Just as long as this place doesn't turn in to a fucking ABW I'll be fine with it... I don't want to see any of this bullshit: "You must have an unknown number of posts to actually use this forum because I think my farts smell like daffodils."

Dave <doesn't play well with Haikos>

Wooo not a bad idea.. now let's get Brandon to find a way to do it, heh.
I think this is the ticket: Cyb - Advanced Permissions Based on Post Count - vBulletin.org Forum

This product allows you to set permissions based on user’s post count for:
-viewing forum (threads listing),
-viewing threads content,
-creating new threads,
-replying to threads,
-viewing attachments,
-Viewing/Posting links/images and e-mail addresses,
-sending private messages,
-sending e-mails.

Jon,

I think a lot of the valuable and top-contributing members here started out as complete noobs themselves, so limiting what the new members can and cannot do is pointless. Some noobs will be willing to learn and evolve into valuable members. Some noobs won't, and they'll be flamed off the board pretty quickly. Then, you have the random new member who is a genius just waiting to share his knowledge (it's rare, but it happens).

How can we figure out what category each noob falls under if we're giving them all the exact same limitations (just for being a new member)?

That being said, don't think in the terms of "What can I do to limit the amount of noobs?", but rather think in terms of "What can I do to make these noobs valuable wickedfire members?". And the answer is simple. We teach them and let them ask question along the way, no matter how stupid the question may seem.

All of the suggestions so far in this thread are only limiting what the noobs can do, and not trying to foster their growth and contributions. I say let them post and reply to as many threads as they want. It's how people learn.

Then again, if they're blatantly spamming or being idiots, then ban them right off the rip. But every new member deserves the benefit of the doubt.

That's my 2 cents.

I think a minimum post before they can start threads or post in certain sections is a good idea, but a couple of posts on this thread kinda discredit it. 2 members, both with less than 20 posts have made useful contributions. If we implemented a minimum post thing then they wouldn't have been able to add to this discussion.

I like the idea of forcing new members to search before they start a thread, but please remove the minumum character limit from the search (eg. you can't search for RSS or SQL) with so many acronyms around it's a bit of a pain.

In addition I think an introductory post should be compulsory. So everyone's first post is in the intro thread - makes it easy to get an idea of what people are like and keep it in one place.

No no no, the idea about minimum posts would be that they can participate in any discussion, they just can't start their own worseless threads until they've made a few posts. I think that's a good balance - it'll let us all figure out if someone is showing up just to spam-blast the place with junk threads or they actually want to participate.

I think just keeping the threshold low, like 25-30 posts would be enough. I think between all of us we can spot the asshats by then.

Hey, self described newbie as i am, why would you want to get rid of future talent? Someone who has to pass some form of initiation to get into the shark tank is just gonna say fck it!

I think the very idea of doing something to curtail a noob is totally retarded. Jon I think you are a sharp individual from what I can tell of your post at time and marketing abilities. But you can come off as a prick when it comes to other people sometime. Yeah you're gonna get some idiots sometimes, but thats in everything you do. Not everyone is going to have your talent or abilities starting out. Do you remember my attempt at posting boobs? A complete clusterfuck(as we would say in the Marine Corps), but as sure as shit, I learned from it and others showed me a few tricks and tips. Many of you got a big laugh out of it , but what the hay. Even you got to be a bit amazed when you see guys on here who you thought were the worst of the worst later step up and become class act forum members.

Its not like the people who come here, do so with the sole intent of pushing shyt ass ebooks and stuff. Most of the members here probably started out as lurkers and liked what they saw so they joined. Let them have their day. Most will grow and stop asking dumb questions or end up fading away. So why try and curtail them?

Plus, you don't even want to take some of the measures to restrict noobs, if I read your last post correctly? Too much freaking work. Hell, that would become a full time occupation in of itself

I have nothing against noobs, but they need to stfu sometimes and read threads.

The reason i havn't been around alot anymore because of the abundance of noobs that have been coming around lately.

Noobs happen, controlling and putting restrictions on people is too much work and isn't worth the time. Ban annoying people.

I'm a newbie with an attitude.

Why would you want to get rid of us? We add so much excitement to the board. But seriously, the easiest way to handle this is as follows: which has been alluded to in one of the previous posts;

Newbies are exiled to the Newbie board for posting only. They can view other sections. Leave them there if they behave until they request to be pardoned...have certain standards (for ex; a certain no. of +rep or such...that have to be met before they can be pardoned...If they request a pardon and haven't met the standards, kick their asses out.

I think that's fair. I love this place and have been reading my butt off and learning loads. I don't feel qualified yet to post anything of value to you guys, but I respect the abundance of knowledge here and would hate it if my time is cut short because I don't post....just my .02

Hey can this thread stop being a bitchfest about newbies and, if anything, get back to OP. stfu kthnxbai

i don't think it's that bad. of course the more jon promotes wf, the worse it gets. it was pretty bad after asw if i recall.
