why is hazing illegal?

I just got an email about fraternity and sorority hazing and whatnot and all the fines they have to pay if they do it. I realize I'm probably just a lot smarter and can see the big picture better than most of the people who make these laws, but it still seems pretty stupid. Person A voluntarily makes a fool out of themselves, and Person B gets punished. If anything, it should be the "hazee" who gets punished, because they made the decision to partake in the ridiculous activities when they had ample opportunity to decide not to.

Of course I'm looking at it from a logical rather than financial point of view. If I ran a university, I wouldn't want all these negative stories about hazing going on solely because it would stop some parents from letting their kids go to my school, which would mean less money for me. I don't think this is how they're looking at it though.

Just wanted to know what you all thought about this. If anyone disagrees, I'd be interested in seeing your points, minus the "omgz ur so dumb hazing sucks ur opinon is wrongz!!1" :arcadefreak:
 


As usual I believe this a blanket solution to special circumstances. Of course it's funny and builds community if someone volunteers to do something, but I believe the issues arise when there is some kind of dumbass trickery involved. Example:

At the U I attended a frat lost its (can't think of the word, license? accreditation? sponsorship?) from the university as a result of several complaints. The nail in the coffin was a hazing incident where pledges were reportedly required to eat so many bowls of spicy hot chili and not crap themselves. Sounds like fun right? Until you find out that the frat members spiked the chili with grossly large amounts of laxative, so much so that one or two of the pledges was hospitalized for severe dehydration.

It's a system that basically encourages things to become more extreme over time, trying to top the previous pledge class and so-on. There are lots of frats/sororities out there that do their hazing in a responsible way and "no-hazing" seems a little extreme. Would Navy Seals be as effective without Hell Week? Doubtful.

It has its place, but like everything it gets infiltrated by sick sons (and daughters) of bitches who get all excited about causing actual harm to people.

That's pretty bad, and in that case I definitely agree that they should be punished. Not for the actual hazing (making them eat the chili), but for contaminating it with the laxative, because I'm sure that's already a crime on its own.

No offense to anyone but I honestly feel that if you're willing to voluntarily and knowingly harm yourself to "avoid social rejection," you're a dumbass who deserves whatever happens to you.
 
Because it's harassment. Why is sexual harassment illegal? People choose to work in a work place, so it's there own fault for putting themselves in that situation, by your logic.

People die from hazing. I'm sure those dumb ass kids deserved that shit.

Except that it's not that simple. Peer pressure equals to being forced to many.

But the major reason is of course that these things always tend to get out of hand and that the ones organizing the hazing usually hide something or lie about what they are going to do.

Wrong. By my logic, if you choose to work in a work place, a guy approaches you and tells you to have sex with him, you do it, and then you regret doing it later, too fucking bad, it's not his fault.

If you were being hazed and you knew exactly what you were doing, there wasn't any secretly spiked chili or any shit like that, and you CHOSE to drink too much and die, it IS your fault.

I've heard of some pretty extreme hazings. You know the joke's gone too far when it makes international news after all.
We don't have colleges at our Unis like you guys have colleges, because all of our universities were actually built in urbanised areas instead of having towns grow up around them. I actually feel like I've missed out on some cool experiences thanks to all the college movies I've seen over the years.

Then again, our unis are pretty much a beer fest without the needs for frats as our drinking age is 18, and a number of campuses are actively used as testing grounds for new alcoholic beverages before they hit the market. O-week Centurions (100 shots of beer in 100 minutes (basically 20 standard drinks in less than two hours)) are about as hardcore as it gets here, unless you join the extreme sports clubs.

However, the intention to harm isn't always there. Sometimes it's just stupidity. For instance when alcohol was banned from hazing in one college because too many students were dying from alcohol poisoning, a fraternity decided to try hazing with water instead. The dumbasses being hazed still died. You drink too much fluid without putting the salts back into your body, you flush the electrolytes out of your body, and you die.

So whether it's intent to harm or just plain stupidity, people die and that's unacceptable to anyone trying to run a college.
 
Hazing is illegal for only one reason..

People want to take away from our fun!
