Windows 10... Microsoft goes back to it's roots.

This.

Right click and select 'Unpin from Start'.

The start menu in 10 is one of the things I love about it, that and the action center.

Thanks for the tip!

The new start menu is better than that metro crap from 8, that's for damn sure. And yeah, lovin' the action center too.

I get it now, the anarcho-capitalism is strong here.

Personally I love Onedrive. It's a great method of backing up my files in case my SSD dies. I take a photo on my Windows Phone for example, it's uploaded to OneDrive and available instantly on my computer. Same goes with all my project files and website backups. All easily accessible from my phone too. I was doing all that shit years ago with Skydrive before iCloud was around. I use two-factor authentication to keep it secure on my end. I even store my various account logins and passwords in OneNote, encrypted with PGP of course

^^ This.

This.

Being able to start a word doc one my phone then finish/clean it up on my PC later is a fucking god send.

You want your phone to integrate with office? no problem, that comes standard out of the box.

365? Yep good to go.

Want everything to sync across multiple devices automatically? Got that covered.

And more ^^This.

OneDrive has been a gamechanger for me and with the 365 subscription, it's got unlimited storage.

The changeover from SkyDrive to OneDrive was a little funky on my mac, but otherwise, it's been great to be able to go from device to device and always have my shit within reach.

Don't upgrade... It's complete shit.

- Can't change white header nav bar. (Unless you want to install a new theme + edit the CSS file, etc)

- Removes ALL Plugins from Chrome.

- If you're using a laptop, all your touchpad settings will revert to THEIR settings. (Which include scrolling up = scrolling down. Annoying but fixable)

- X buttons don't work half the time, the bounding box areas don't have an outline.. So you have to literally hit the X.

- During install there are easily 10+ privacy options in advanced.

But here's the thing...

- In settings, there are easily 20+ MORE privacy options they didn't even tell you about. Plus apps that get your private data/information. Even SMS/Texts.. (To the point where I feel the only reason 10 was "free" was because it's riddle with massive data collection. The # of times I saw read our privacy policy was insane.

- In the start menu, it's pre-setup with a bunch of "apps" aka ads. Iheartradio, etc.

- UI/UX is awful, looks worse than windows 98 on right click/windows/etc. Not sure if serious.. Start menu looks cool, but that's about it?

- If you're running a high res screen, text will be too small, icons will be insanely crisp to the point of almost blurred out. (Easy fix but still the icons are outdated/funky)

- It's simple, but not really... They've made 2 ways to do everything. For instance, there's a new settings panel in addition to the old control panel now, lol. So instead of having just ONE, they made another one and mashed a few things in there and called it a day; leaving the old one doing the same exact functions.

...

Thankfully there was a revert back to Windows 7 option in the Settings area.

Back to 7 now, much happier. :)

I didn't/don't have problems with either of these things. I've heard about all kinds of problems over at reddit though, so I don't doubt it.

Still need to update my touchpad drivers...

Waiting for this to come out. Hopefully it's good

Windows 95 Sucked -> Windows 98 Ruled
Windows ME Sucked -> Windows XP Ruled
Windows Vista Sucked -> Windows 7 Ruled
Windows 8 Sucked -> Windows 10 Ruled

No surprises here, when Microsoft makes a jump they ALWAYS fail, then on the next iteration they get it right.

It's my fucking computer after all.

Yep, it's your computer alright. You do know though that none of the software on it is yours, right? Not the OS, the programs, apps, fonts, or anything else you've installed is yours. You're simply given the privilege of using that software which can be revoked at any time.

I'm using Windows 7. Windows 8 was fucking awful.

3 years later and I still don't get these kind of statements. What was awful about it exactly? My experience with Windows 8 is EXACTLY the same as Windows 7, albeit better looking, faster, more secure, better gaming with directx 11.1, etc. For $3.99 you can get your Start menu back, exactly like it was in Win7. If that's all that you think made it awful, it's a moot point.

I'll be updating all 3 of my machines to Windows 10 tomorrow most likely. Bring on the future!

They're coming out with a desktop messaging app that syncs with your phone SMS's in a similar way to Apple's "Messages" app and iMessages, so you can send and read SMS's from your computer etc. They're not collecting data for shits and giggles, how else are they meant to implement these kinds of features?

Damn so many microcucks in here. I'm running Debian because linux/gnu is a sexy development environment, doesn't jack your data and spy on you, is more lightweight, is more customizable, and CS:GO runs on it now which is basically the only game worth playing. Feels good to be free, man.

Most people here spend most of their time inside a browser / shell / IDE / word processor, does the surrounding OS really matter that much?

Nope, not at all.

Doesn't stop hordes of people deriving their identity from a product though.
