Windows 7: My Take

1. Stop using the buzzword "robust". Every time I hear this I want to strangle someone.

2. Android is not eclipsing Windows Mobile, and certainly not about to fuck with iPhone or Blackberry.

3. 100% "Cloud based" apps are a pipe dream, because there will still be places where people cannot get internet access.

4. Google fanboys on digg/reddit are more annoying than any Apple or Windows fanboy, and I'm an Apple user for life. Jesus.

TRUTH

I'll get Win7 just as soon as I have 2-3 days free time to switch all my shit over. It might just take an hour to get your OS installed, but I then have another 30-40 apps that need to be installed an configured, not to mention an extensive font and plug-in collection. It's going to take as long as any system rebuild and then some.

The missus got a new laptop for her job and upgraded to W7.
Looks slick like Vista, works well like XP(sp3). People are going to like it.

A lot of people are going to get scared off by Google's OS for two simple reasons.
1) Home PCs are bought predominantly for entertainment, not work, and people want to play games for that. Google OS won't support the current array of games out of the box, and support for new ones will be patchy.
2) Not enough of it is under personal control. Even more so if it's like GoogleDocs. Cloud computing is great in theory, but would someone with a Sidekick care to share what happened recently? People are going to want to keep a lot of their shit client-side for a good while to come, and only use the cloud as backup and a way to access files remotely because they don't know how to setup VPNs.

There's also the outside access issues. Sure, MS could potentially be looking at everything on your comp since Win2K, but most people were entirely unaware of that. People are aware that Google mines your data to market shit to you better, and that frightens Joe Q Public for some reason.

So yeah, Win8 is assured, Win9 is likely... It's Win-X that's not a sure thing.

Is Win7 64 bit only, like the latest Vistsa 64 (which I detest)? I hope not.

I love XP.. I have 2 XP machines and a Vista. The Vista is a pain in the ass, I hate the constant permission popups, the constant software configuration issues (cant run any older 16 bit stuff on it which sucks), and in general I hate the Windows Explorer windows. To this date, I still can't get my Windows Explorer filelist to default to list all files in Details mode, sometimes I get icons, sometimes list mode, sometimes tiles, I've tried everything and finally gave up.

XP is just rock solid, never have any issues. I'll most likely stick with that unless I hear incredible things about W7.

this shit made me kill my mother.

The reason for a new Windows coming out right now has a lot to do with netbooks. The plan was probably to release Vista final service pack and to be still working on the next OS that would require 4 GB of RAM or whatever to run smooth. Instead, Vista's system requirements are similar to Windows 7 and the version that is going on most netbooks supposedly won't even allow people to change the wallpaper.

They've always done their best to convince people that if they don't have the latest, then it is obsolete. The netbook thing, most of which had Linux, threw them for a loop. They ended up getting XP onto netbooks, but this was awkward for them due to it's age.

When Joe Customer went into a store, his Windows choices were the one he had heard bad things about (Vista) or the 8 year old one (XP). Getting a new name on the market became more important than developing the next fancy OS.

The point is that they will change strategy to meet market demands and conditions. The days of them throwing something out there with little regard to what the average computer can efficiently run may be over. This helps them to compete with things like Google's OS.

The permissions are there for a reason. Any new OS should have this feature to help fight viruses and spy ware. It's for your benifit. Your just too blind to see it. You can be a retard and turn it off, your choice.

Bullshiit. Run something in the background thats in the core OS that scans for it, dont make the entire screen black out for a half second and then give me an alert when I want to do something every 30 seconds.

Where do I go to turn this off, I had read it wasnt an option. I may just be a retard and do it ASAP, thanks for the tip.

Great article, but its based on the theory that the general public actually have brains. In reality everyone will just baa happily along to microsofts tune for a long time to come.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's had this problem. I hate Vista 64, but I'm used to its quirks now and probably don't notice half of them.

Oh, and I turned UAP off, can't stand the little popup everytime I boot that reminds me of this fact. Or the reminder to update IE to 8. Hell, I've downgraded it at least 3 times because 8 doesn't play well with a lot of shit. So, anytime I have to use IE for something, 8 fucks it up and I have to downgrade it back to 7, then the annoying little remind to update my system just hangs out in the little system tray.

I'd switch to Linux if I wasn't hooked on gaming, but I'll never switch to Android. Google will find a way to track whatever you're doing on your computer and use that data to "better" their search algorithms or further their bid to take over the world.

While in windows explorer, setup one folder the way you want it, like detail view, sorted by type, yada yada. Then go up to Tools then Folder Options. Click the View Tab. Then click apply to all folders, close out windows explorer then reopen to see that all the folders have been set to the same view.

That's what the compatibility mode button is for, makes it render like IE7. Most of the javascript routines have not yet been upgraded to treats IE8 more like the open standard than Ie7 and earlier, so a lot of the JS is expecting IE8 to behavelike IE7.

That is where advertising comes in. I know advertisers get a bad rep, but if Apple didn't advertise, then who would switch to Macs?

The public is ignorant because they are under informed (many by choice), not because people are inherently stupid. Stupid behavior would be continuing to run Win 95 SE for free, not upgrading to Win 7.

They are going to have to pry XP out of my cold dead hands, with the Vista debacle there is no way im upgrading to 7 unless its proven as stable as XP is.

Bullshit? The reason the controls are there is to catch things your scanner won't, because you know they have to find this stuff fist and then add it to the scanner. Your scanner isn't going to stop something home brewed or relatively new. That's why it's important.

Oh yeah on disabling: Let me google that for you

Yeah I agree. Microsoft may have left their golden age but I don't see them going anywhere.

Linux is a pain in the ass to get it properly set up the way you want it but once its done it is so worth it. Infinitely fewer problems than windows. I would switch over completely but I need my games. I would buy a mac if I had money to toss but frankly I don't really think they're worth the cost unless you're computer illiterate or money is no object.

I bought XP Pro when it first came out and the 32bit Vista Home premium when that arrived.
I have each on different machines, my old PC (IDE drive runs XP) and Vista on my Quad.
In the beginning I detested Vista, I have never known an operating system that slowed a quad core machine down to nearly standstill.
This drove me mad.
But now I have it running sweet.
Firstly I sacked all the fancy graphical interfaces like the stupid holographic clock etc.
Next stopped Bitdefender from running, all it is allowed to do now is update.
I used to use the free AVG but found a far superior free anti-virus called Avast which keeps everything nasty at bay.
Next was to switch off the constant running indexing system which uses a ton of resources and memory.
Lastly sack Internet Explorer and use Firefox because it beats it hands down.

Hate to say it but no other OS has a chance to overtake MS until there's some automatic Gaming compatibility. My whole life that's the only reason I've been loyal to MS. I mean there are so many PC gamers and good PC games.

And no, no one wants to install this or that.. or do backflips to Jerry-rig up a PC game in Linux or Mac. They just want to put in the game and hit go.
