World Cup General Chat

I finally get a slight interest in this fucking event only to discover that the refs can pretty much do whatever they want without explanation.

Gee, no potential for corruption there. You have anti-American douchebags like ii silver ii reffing this thing, guys falling down and crying every 30 seconds, games that can actually end in ties and scores that are actually less than baseball. I can't imagine why more Americans don't get into soccer...

..

well the refs of last night's NBA final were just as bad. Kobe shot as many Fts as the whole Celtics team

Want soccer to blow up and take off in America? Here ya go...

  1. Make the goals bigger. Americans like scoring. So does every other human being on earth. More scoring makes for more excitement and more fun.
  2. Stop being such pussies and integrate some contact in the sport. Put on some lacrosse gear and let them shove and block a little. I'm not saying football type contact but for fucks-sake, this falling down and crying all the time goes against most Americans' style.

That would be an entertaining sport. Dudes scrapping it out, vying for position on the ball, points being scored. Fuck yeah, I may start a league. This shit would catch on like wildfire...

do we want england to win or lose? the espn guys just said we want them to lose

Best Case Scenario for the US is that the game ends in a 0-0 draw.

Then after 2 games, the rankings in the Group would be:

Slovenia - 4
USA - 2
England - 2
Algeria - 1

and we would hold the tie breaker on England... but we still have more games to play.

We should have fucking won though.

No question about it... we NEED to beat Algeria in 5 days.

I'm thinking

1) get rid of offsides, that should add more scoring / risk taking right there
2) stop the clock during stoppage, the game can always end at 90 minutes
3) allow more contact / call fewer stoppages

I think the goal is big enough, the goalie doesn't have a big chance as is.

Maybe change offsides to a certain point on the field, similar to hockey, but other than that soccer rules are perfect. just the refs suck.

Funny thing is with all you England USA haters is...i think that that shitty call could actually effect the outcome of your country making into the next round if I am not mistaken

edit: nevermind i think Slovenia has the tie breaker...but what if both games tie with the right amount of goals?

can someone explain to me both how a team gets / what is the tiebreaker and also what bearing the number of goals scored in a single game has on standings.

these rules are confusing as shit.

First it goes by Points, if tied, difference in Goals... if that is tied, head to head matches... if those are tied, order is drawn from a hat (no lie)

A Win - 3 points
A Draw - 1 Point
A Loss - 0 Points

If 2 countries are tied in points (above)... They base it off the difference of goals scored and given up.

So, for example... US, England and Slovenia could have have 5 points, but US is +5 in goal difference, England is +1 and Slovenia is +2.

Slovenia and US would go through, England would go home.

etc etc.

It is the scenarios that are playing with your head....

As it sits today.

Slovenia #1
USA #2
England #2
Algeria #3

If the group standings ended today, US and England tiebreaker would be drawn from a hat. No lie.

Here are the current scenarios for the last games.

United States loses - which, after today, looks very possible though not probable. Regardless, the U.S. loses and they're out, finishing either fourth (if England beats Slovenia) or third.
United States draws - if they draw, U.S. gets into the knockout stage if England loses or if England draws and loses on the goal difference or goals scored (or lots) tiebreakers to the U.S. In this scenario, the U.S. can finish no better than second in Group C.
United States wins - the U.S. is into the knockout stage. They win the group if a.) Slovenia and England draw and the U.S. beats Slovenia on one of the tiebreakers, or b.) England beats Algeria but loses on tiebreaker to the U.S. If Slovenia beats England, the Slovenes win the group.
USA World Cup Scenarios Simplified: Hopefully Tiebreaker Won't Be Necessary Anymore - From Our Editors - SBNation.com

Basically, the US just has to win. The End.

If they draw or lose... then scenarios get crazy.

I think the goal is big enough, the goalie doesn't have a big chance as is.

1) No offsides = retarded. I think offsides should remain the same, but maybe some technology to see if the person is onside or off, linesmen are unreliable. Some big ass light goes off so the player doesn't jizz himself when he scores but is really offside.

2) I agree with this tbh. Game ends at 90. You can still have the hype of stoppage time at like 89 minutes. This makes the game more fluid, no time wasters.

3) Varies per country or origin of referee. English referees try to avoid stopping the game, playing an advantage or just ignoring a slight push. But this isn't the case for other refs (see Germany v Serbia). IMO this is why people think footballers are pussies - going down when they feel ANY contact.

Win = 3 points, draw = 1 point, loss = 0 points. A team wins 3-1, their goal difference is +2. Same way if they lose by the same amt. GD is -2. Progression from the group is whoever has most points, if level on points a higher goal difference, if the same its head to head performance.

England played SHIT today. They needed goals and shouldn't have played Heskey. Heskey is the perfect player if he doesn't touch the ball. Strong presence. IMO defoe should've been on from the start.

Still, England will kill Slovenia, US will beat Algeria by a goal. England and US through.
