Worth $20 Billion but is a cheap bastard

It's because most jobs that depend on tips (bartender, waitress, delivery guy ,etc) normally earn much, much less than minimum wage. They have a special hourly wage for "tip workers". That's basically why people here tip.

Now, granted that said worker DOES have the option to find a non-tipped based job, but in most cases those tips exceed a minimum wage. So, it's kind of win-win for the worker as well as the company.

ok so, you present the following argument:

we assume the "minimum wage thing" resembles any kind of reasonable something

1. employees salaries are below minimum wage

2. because of that, they depend on tips

3. if they dont get tipped, they can find a different job that does not have them depend on tips.

4. because the tipping system is win-win for everyone, where everyone means the employer and the employee - the customer should be forced by public opinion to tip.

5. instead of the employee actually being forced to provide good service in exchange for an obviously elective payment on top of the obligatory one.

interesting.

In the UK we tip, but not like in the US.

If you have a meal out here you'd typically tip somewhere 5-10% of the bill. You'd never tip at a bar though, or anything like that.

I don't tip all the time either, just when I feel I've had exceptionally good service.

Never understood the american "tip everyone for actually doing their job!" kinda thinking. People should be tipped for excellence, not just turning up.

The people feel the need to tip is because the people serving you generally make something like $2 or $3 an hour. I'm not trying to start a flame war about herp derp they should find a better job. I'm just stating why most people feel the need to tip.

In the US food service pay is based around a tipping system. I tip a standard 20%, and then up or down based on the server.

Depending on the state. My state has no server wage or tip credit.

Why would he leave a tip?

They have salaries.

Seems stupid and in some countries they will not even take your tip, because it is insulting. Like giving alms...

That is stupid. The owner just has to include that in the price of the meals/drinks or have a "staying fee" like half an hour chilling at the bar = exact amount of money. Then their salaries would be sufficient and the stupid "tip habit" will go away.

The restaurant is talking to the press about how one of their customers didn't leave a tip?

That is a whole lot more lame than not leaving a tip.

They were also spotted eating McDonalds for those that care what they are eating and spending their money on lol.

I think it's only the Americans who have an obsession with tipping. Waiting tables is easy work, so is bartending and they easily make very good money because everyone thinks they make less than minimum wage so everyone tips generously. What's so hard about bringing out food or pouring a beer? I'd rather tip a doctor. Tipping should be an extra something for good service and added incitament for doing your job well, it shouldn't be guaranteed.

Sorry guys for being so retarded but I had to get up at 5 o'clock this morning so I am fucking stupid today :/

It doesn't sound like you've ever worked at a restaurant or bar in the US or even eaten at one, rusvik. If you are serving you make less than minimum wage. In a lot of states you in fact make so little that your hourly rate is literally there only to cover the taxes you have to pay on your tips.

Servers that are good at their job and work at a high volume restaurant often do quite well. However, they're not just bringing food or pouring a drink. They are multitasking like crazy and dealing with a lot of entitled mother fuckers that feel like hot shit because they're placing the order instead of taking it.

Who cares if you don't agree with it. You're never going to get decent service anywhere if you tip like a jackass. I'm very happy to longer work in the service industry but I will never look down on anyone that does.
