There are many simply preventable causes of death out there which get .0001% of the attention that something like a school shooting does.
If you were to measure the impact on a society these death causes have, it would be very difficult to argue that guns or assault weapons are such an enormous concern that legislation must be made immediately to deal with the problem.
What is more frightening to you - a cigarette, or a gun? The answer is gun. Guns are a lot better at marketing the intended feeling of fear to everyone around it, despite killing fewer. Cigarettes have much more friendly marketing despite being far more deadly (robbing you of your wealth and your life).
It's so interesting to see this kind of thing play out. Human beings flip out over an issue relatively small simply because design and perception are so powerful in influencing the human mind.
