My thought was at first maybe UFOs, but I think it is government testing of their own ufo like ship or maybeee a ufo they found and fixed up and are trying to get operational to communicate? Wanted to throw that out there for people to think about. :)

If the rumors are true, it offers strong evidence that an entirely separate abiogenesis event happened on this Earth! Do you realize how insane a discovery that is?
No; these bacteria were deliberately experimented upon in an environment with no phosphorous and plenty of arsenic. Such an event *could* have occured, but this announcement is not about that.

At the very least it shows how capable and adaptable life is, how common it must be in the universe, and how this opens the minds of scientists to new possibilities they never considered before.

Yes, this is major the point of the announcement I think. It means that, in the absence of phosphorous, this particular bacteria can use arsenic in its place because arsenic can fill a similar (yet inferior) role. The molecular bonds are much weaker, and it was postulated that these strange bacteria may not live very long. However, one of the major talking points was that in different environmental circumstances, substitutes like this may actually perform better than our Earthly standards.

Science fiction writers have discussed these sorts of possibilities for decades; silicon-based life forms, among others, have been popularized in books, tv, and movies. These are not "possibilities never considered before", but they were previously just theoretical; a living, breathing example on Earth is something most scientists never expected to see firsthand.

Yup, basically what we thought to be absolute necessities to life, are no longer true. This is "the world is not flat" caliber of importance here. In retrospect, it's quite egocentric to think that the only way an organism could survive, would be to be built exactly like us. HURRRRRmosapiens FTL
