There is much talk on here regarding “survival” when the SHTF or TEOTWAWKI. Most of it revolves around how much fire power one has locked and loaded or what a great sniper/marksman one is or just who has the biggest epeen ready for the post apocalyptic world we are all going to find ourselves in at some point. And while I agree that you need weaponry, skills and know how in addition to some balls, there is so much more necessary to be prepared for this scenario than being “Billy Badass”.
I am very optimistic that when shit does turn for the worst the majority of us won’t be hell bent on shooting first and asking questions later when encountering other human beings. That being said, at some point in your bug out scenario you’re going to need something. Whether it is something as basic as, human interaction, food or medicine / medical care. Skype is going to be offline bros, so if you’re a pale ass geek who is afraid of human interaction … you’re fucked. Try and get over any socially related phobias now so that you can naturally interact with other people you may encounter, when you need to.
With survival in mind and wanting to expand the topic beyond Guns, Ammo and Kill ‘em all let God sort ‘em out, here are some other things to consider.
Communication
Communication is going to be extremely vital for survival and sanity. Phone lines and cell towers are very likely going to be inoperable. This will be on purpose initially to limit communication while martial law is implemented. Afterwards you better be someone damn important if you expect to be able to make a call on a cell phone or landline. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE – I was a contractor for the Gov.’s office of homeland security for four years, you need a special calling card for both land lines and cell phones and you are placed in a queue which is regulated by the number on our card in order of departmental levels of hierarchy and importance. We had mock drills regarding all this with the H1N1 scare a few years ago. So, what do you do? Here are some options:
1) HAM RADIO –buy and learn to operate one now! You can also send 160 character emails via Ham radio from one station to another. 2) CB – yep, good ole Citizens Band Radio… breaker, breaker 1 9. Good for a four mile radius with a good antenna. With a shitty antenna you’re good for ½ mile to 1 ½ miles of coverage depending on terrain. Shelter:
While having a home in Montana with a well and a wind turbine are ideal in this scenario, it isn’t practical for many of us for a variety of reasons. So what do you do? One option is to find the cheapest land possible that has decent soil properties for planting and water well usage and build a survival shelter on it. You have to do some due diligence and make sure you understand of all the covenants in the area you bought your land in as to what building codes are and square footage minimums etc, but a good idea is a metal shipping container. It’s trendy as fuck right now to buy one and modify the shit out of it, but for our purposes here is what you need.
1) Shipping Container – ranging from free to $2400
2) Spray foam insulate the inside – less than $350 if you do it yourself. Rent the machine from Home Depot or a local tool rental shop.
3) Metal Grinder – to cut some windows and ventilation holes.
4) Heater/A.C. units to install.
Obviously depending on what type of power you plan on using, dictates what models of ac/heat units you buy. I would be practical and get things used in RV/Campers that can be ran on propane and solar/ battery banks. Remember this doesn't have to be pretty, just functional.
