Who would have known that religion - intended in my subjective opinion to take civilization out of anarchy - could be fostering conflict in today's age? What was intended to take humans out of conflict is now causing the conflict. Although I certainly believe in God, this is what holds me back from practicing any given religion per se. You cant argue against one religion and maintain that religion itself is alright, Its a slippery slope. Not that you've done that here, but I'm guessing you wouldn't have the same distaste for Christianity, and my point is...you just cant choose one over the other. They are all capable of evil and certainly have the track record to prove it. The sooner we all except that the world would be a much better place without organized religion the better.

EDIT: I just realized that SS illustrated the "proven track record" that I was getting at. It reminded me of a hallway in College that had those pictures plus about 100 more lined along the hallway of all the lovely middle ages torture methods that ensued in the name of Christianity. +1 to the first person who can find the one where they lowered the naked people on to some gigantic metallic upside down cone.

Christianity has evolved as a religion and adapted to the times. Islam is still the same death-obsessed, medieval religion it was when it was created. Actually, it has become worse in the last century. The values and practices of the Wahhabi sect, the most radical, have gained popularity thanks to our trillions of dollars we give to the Saudis allowing them to spread their cancer around the world.

Religions encompass the culture they were created in, some worse than others. Their resistance to change (of course the Koran and Bible are the word of god and are eternal) means that we are stuck with the backward values and corrupt pratices that happened to be common at the time, even though society is light years ahead now. Unfortunately Islam is one that is not only the most destructive but also has progressed the least over time.

I certainly don't think all religions are bad. I think any religion that holds Sharia law in such a high regard is bad. When was the last time a Christian leader said something 'sharia-ish' and wasn't condemned?

Apples to apples time: When Eric Rudolph bombed the olympics and a few abortion clinics, All Christian denominations (and Jews by the way) loudly condemned the action. When Osama 'bin fuckin men' Laden decided to ram 4 jets into US soil, where was the muslum outrage? Even the pope condemned Rudolph and anyone thinking of using violence to make a point about human rights. I don't recall any Imams on the television or in international news condeming the actions.

Torture techniques of a whole different world hardly compare to what was done to some 10 year old girl's privates in the time it took us to write our posts.
